King Size Bed & Mattress

So there we are..
Mrs Alias Broke the bed, it was a old metal frame one which the bottom rail fell off. It was welded on. I could get it welded back on, but its not a quality bed.
Ive found a mahogany sleigh bed for £250 from eBay, which i am thinking about, but the mattress is a different thing.
The seller is selling an AirSprung Chelsea Mattress, which i cant find online, or any references to it online.
Is there any other good deals for a King Size double, and what should i look out for in a mattress, and does anyone have a way of finding the info on the above mattress.
Regards,
ALias

There are many things to take into account when purchasing a mattress:- How firm do you like your mattress?
- What is your budget?
- What type of base is it going on?
- Are you sensitive to heat or cold in bed?
- What type of spring systems do you like?

This isn't a cheap option, but if you want to sleep on a cloud, go to dreams & buy the Kildare, I have it in the superking:D
Its a divan, I have it with the fours drawers, they are really roomy.0 -
Something I also noticed on the ebay listings (and have posted on your other thread): If it is a showroom clearance then it would be a business selling the items. In this case they should be operating within distance selling regs. So beware.0

As you well know Mrs E, your mattress was very very expensive, and would therefore be well out of the price range for most people who are asking for advice on MSE, which is supposed to be about money saving after all.0 -

Tim,
This bed as the base ideally, upon price.
and this mattress..
Cant find anything online about the mattress.
Unsure about distant selling regs, but we planned to collect the bed & mattress. Inspect on collection. Assemble, sleep on it for 2 weeks then pack it up to be shipped overseas. Return to old broken bed, scrap it upon leaving house.
Have one person ringing me back today, there was an add in the paper which is £150 for a pine bed. Isnt what we really want, so depends if the eBay bed sells or not. Going to email them in a bit offering them £250 for the mattress & the bed. Collected asap.
Any tips.?0 -

I am allowed to express a view Tim.
Many people will weigh up quality & comfort V price & make a decission based on that.
I think you do MSEers a great diservice if you think all they are after is cheap stuff.
Value for money is not measured by price alone;)0 -

I saw the links that you posted, which is how I know that it appears that they aren't telling the truth. If you collect from them, then make sure you see the bed assembled, and then they dismantle it while you are there. This is the only way you will be able to tell if it is complete and undamaged.
As for the mattress, I wouldn't bother taking an Airsprung mattress abroad with you, as they are very low down on the quality scale.
The mattress only has 2cm of memory foam (it doesn't state the density) which isn't worth having. And contains 13.5g (medium) open coil springs.0 -

Yes you are allowed your opinion, and you have told most of MSE how much you paid for your mattress. This is how we all know that you paid way over the top (as is usually the case in Dreams) for you mattress.
The OP was asking about a mattress for £100. So coming on here and telling everyone that you paid well over £1000 for your mattress isn't really very helpful or MSE is it? In fact it sounds more like showing off. You are doing MSE members a diservice by suggesting that they have to spend over £1000 to get a good mattress.
I'm not saying for a second that your mattress isn't very comfortable. After all it should be for what you paid for it. However it is very easy to find a far superior mattress for a fraction of the price.0 -
Tim,
Thanks for your help.
Ive asked them for a bit more info about the bed. We've had a look round and cant put a retail price on this item, not find out who makes it.
They have said its solid, but thats about it.
I am unsure what mattress we have at the minute, but its pretty close near to its end of life.
Other alternatives were things like this -
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/NEW-ORTHOPAEDIC-KING-SIZE-5ft-Mattress-ONLY-SALE_W0QQitemZ330368212784QQcmdZViewItemQQptZBeds_Mattresses?hash=item4ceb7adf30
Mrs Alias is in town at the minute looking around bed shops for mattreses etc. Shall see how it goes. Informed her to avoid SCS, United Carpets.
If we went £250 on the bed, then were looking at £150 for a mattress. Not alot. But thats all we have.
Otherwise, its the old mattress.
Both of us have no back problems, and we've been sleeping on it for the past 3-4years & that includes turning it over on every other sheet change.0 -

If you have back problems and you are on a limited budget, then I would suggest paying more for your mattress and getting a cheaper base (probably a divan).
I know a divan base wouldn't look as nice as the sleigh bed, but you really need support for your back. This would mean getting a pocket sprung mattress as a minimum requirement, as the support they give is far superior to open coil springs or foam only.0
