    Debbie_debt - Heres an idea..
Make up a nice selection of what you can do easiest and cheapest, and make a little box with them in.
Pop into local cafes, and let them have them, and give them your card/contact details. have a chat with the owner, normally its someone who likes the odd cake.
if theyre up for it, make sure that you can cover your costs for each cake. when you're negotiating, an amazing 'tactic' is the personal gift.
no joke. state your price, talk about how great the cakes are, price again then say 'What i'll do aswell, i throw in a chocolate sponge for you as a thank you'
doing something personal for whoever is sat infront of you can swing the deal. true its technically bribery, but no-one tells the taxman about a cake ;)

Thanks so much for the advice Esqulax - I might just do that! I've a pretty little basket I could use to transport them which would look very 'country kitchen' but very good point on the costings... I need to properly cost out how much each item costs to make and do a mark-up to make it profitable along with packaging etc.

Do you know if I need to have food handling hygiene etc certificates? Will people immediately ask for them??

  • Debie-debt i personally think that cafes etc will want to see if you have all the council certs etc...

but i think your cake baking would come into its own with fetes etc, and some markets, as one offs;)

you could also tell your family and friends you will make cakes etc for birthdays at x amount.... dont be afraid to say to family you are thinking of selling them, you never know they might even get orders for you at their place of work etc...

I think you may need at least a basic in food hygiene, if not, having one is kindof a bonus. but to be honest thats a walk n the park, and easy to do.
Im not sure about the seling for profit side of things, whether you need certain quality things, but im sure somone on here has experience therof.
perfect excuse to start a new thread :)

as Trikerchick says above, it will all be about birthdays, fetes and one offs.
Valentines day isnt far away.. maybe a massive one off batch of lovey dovey things to nearby cafes, along with your 'available for fairs and fetes' leaflets ;)

Oh.. and personally - Homemade bread and butter pudding... mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

Surely there are rules and stuff for selling cakes to cafes who will then sell them on to the public? Sorry, not trying to be negative, just think this one might be trickier than that? :o

  • That's fab everyone, so nice to have some good advice :D

And you're right - this thread isn't really the place but it's definately a good excuse for a thread - I reckon others will be able to start a similar little business to contribute to their totals for this year. I reckon you'll be right about needing food hygiene certs etc for cafes, i'll look into it. But maybe selling at fairs etc might be easier.

    Cheers everyone

Woohoo, i've just won £50 on Bingo Britain, but can I withdraw that as I still have a portion of my original deposit in my balance AND my bonus balance intact. Do you start using the bonus balance when your original deposit has been used?

in reality your kitchen needs to be inspected and be of a certain standard and have a cert from the council etc, exactly the same as a cafe or any food place.

but i have bought from my friends who have made cakes etc....;)

also some schools now will only except shop bought food products for kids parties.... i can remember the day when there was home baked cakes etc.... brought into school yummmie

just withdraw the 50 squid.... quick.... as they will use this money and your deposit money before the 'free' bonus money.

    well done:T

If you've ever seen the inner hygiene levels of some exceptionally popular cafes and restuarants you'll be surprised what you can getaway with whilst still serving customers. Good luck
