    More advice again I'm afraid!!!!!!

I've looked into getting a basic shop on Ebay at £14.99 per month. Does anyone have experience of this?? Is it easy to set up and manage?

I've also looked into some wholesale websites, some charge £10 to join, is this worth it or in fact necessary?? They say its a one off fee to access their stock and advice etc. However is this a way in which they make a large amount of their revenue, £10 for pressing send on a stock email?? Advice / opinions please

My biggest question is tax, how does that all work??? Do I need to put aside the money for the tax bill at the end of the year or do you pay monthly, do you need to keep a proper official account etc, are we talking note book accounts or accountants????

    Hope you can help

Just want a little vent really about the feedback system on ebay! just got left a neg for something i sold a month ago before this challenge. They left it till i started selling lots and it's knocked my score down to 98.9 fed up now. It was uncalled for to if i say so only a cheap thing i sold and i realised it was missing some bits when packing it up (my own fault) let buyer know straight away refunded straight away and appologised. I wasn't expecting a positive but a neg? I could have sent it with the bits missing!

That goes along with the neg i got last week from a guy who bought a used and old game described correctly because it had some scratches!

Is it just me or am i justified in being a tiny bit peeved?

if you acted within the ebay/paypal rules (sounds like oyu did, full refund etc) apply to have the neg removed..... I;m sure I read somewhere that this is possible.

A few of your questions are probably better answered on the ebay/carboot part of the MSe forum. You will more than likely get a better response to the shop question.

Personally I am not paying for wholesale information as there is a lot of information out there without the need to pay. Some others are happy to pay.

As far as tax goes, have a look at the HMRC website or even business link website. It takes a bit of getting used to but the best advice I can give is keep accurate records of your expenses and your income, you will be taxed on the difference!

The whole ebay feedback system is very suspect if you ask me anyway, people are buying second hand and expect the same as if they were buying new or free postage or they see the price that you paid for postage and forget its postage and PACKAGING

Some people actually try to use it as a sort of hold they have over you.

I do my best to be fair and post and pay as soon as possible. I even refund any whole £1 on postage mistakes.

I never leave feed back until they have left feedback for me on items I've sold, then I know they have it and also if they try to get funny I can write a comment in their feedback, its sad but thats how you have to be.

Just like I aways send recorded to stop people claiming back on paypal, another scam out there!!!

If somebody wants my business for anything they had better well pitch it to me and provide brilliant service ... personally would never pay for access to a "wholesaler" with a "secret stock". Just me. The World is full of manufacturers and companies actively seeking clients for their wares, not charging for their time and "experience". As mentioned a few times in previous posts, research via internet, trade show listings, labels on products (amazing what you can find) and asking questions. My brother once walked into a sports shop and noted that he liked their frizbees ... the shop assistant explained all their finer points and then my brother asked him how much for 5,000 of them. The man in the shop didn't have a clue once he picked his chin off the floor and after looking through all his literature he said he couldn't meet that kind of order. He was happy to pass on details of his supplier though and a step up the chain was made.

For this firstly I would say give this number a ring: 0845 915 4515 it is HMRC's newly self employed help line they will be able to advise you on how you pay tax. You do not need an accountant, I am doing all my accounts myself. Keep all invoices from ebay for fees, items bought and sold. Keep invoices receipts from anything you buy for use with your business like packing materials, postage and stock. I have also set up spread sheets for incomings and outgoings so it is easier to see what profit I have and where from. Check with your jobcentre/ local authority most will have information on local organisations who help those starting businesses. They will run free book keeping courses which you can attend and can also advise on other areas of setting up a business like business rates.

Bit out of left field ... does anyone know how to get really well stuck on stickers off things? Any help really appreciated :).

Heya, depends what the item it is stuck on is.

I tend to use really hot soapy water first.
If that doesnt work I tend to try nail polish remover!
and when that doesnt I use white spirit! (very rare though)

BUT the last two obviously leave a funny smell, so item will need to be "washed" or "cleaned" after.

    Hth!

  • I agree with the comments re ebay feedback, you only need one really stroppy person to severely knock your score even if it itsn't justified but I thought that now the system had changed so you can't leave negatvie feedback? It used to be the case that you could reply to any comments so at least can have your say there if you feel its unjustified comment. I usually say in the blurb to contact me first if any probs and if not happy before leaving neg feedback and luckily on the 1 or 2 occassions someone has felt need to complain they have done that and then been happy with how I resolved and left me positive anyway. Both times I have offered a full refund though, one took it up one didn't. As for Amazon, omg I have never listed on there before but how easy is it? Think I am hooked already seems so much less faffy than ebay and seems as if will have much more likelihood of selling books there than on greenmetropolis...I agree that with greenmetropolis the prob is prob a lack of traffic as its not that well known a site...mroe advertising needed! As for Amazon, am I right in thinking postage is sent at £2.75 no variations? And do Amazon email to your email when you get a sale? I think I will be using Amazon for books and CD's, ebay for misc oddity collectable type stuff and bootbay for general 'tatt'....will be at this computer 24/7 at this rate, but if it means my house is clutter free bring it on!
