    Hmmm - I'm in a quandry.
Have an old mobile phone to sell. They go on ebay for between £40-£50 but I threw out the box and charger in July when I was going to (but never got round to) sending it to a recycle website. Without the box and charger, its tricky to guess what I might get for it.

One recycle phone co are offering £31 + £3.50 cashback through topcashback.co.uk but I've just read some horror stories about the company.

Do I try ebay at the risk of it selling cheaply, or go with the recycle co with the risk of not being paid at all?

I am sending one to envirofone, used them in the past and they were good but can't vouch for them recently until I have used them again ... waiting for their envelopes to arrive in the snow bound post. Not sure what they are offering for your phone though. Alternatively, keep an eye on ebay and see what similar phones are going for to get an idea ... also there is a reason why people buy chargers and empty boxes on such sites ... you just need to factor in the impact on you margin and how much hassle you want versus reward. Let us know how you get on and, if you use a recycling company, how the service turns out.

I used O2 Recycle through cashback.co.uk - they were excellent. They offered the highest price ( I searched them all!) and the money's just been delivered in my account today (I posted it on 31 December)

No hassle, I highly recommend them. Oh, and of anyone wants a link to cashback.co.uk, just PM me and I'll refer you.
  • IMO it´s more useful to keep this thread going as our main ´home´ and not to separate the various money-making ideas entirely onto different boards - reason being, if we know what other people are doing, we might come up with useful ideas even if it´s not a theme we ourselves are working on. Additional, more specific threads can of course be useful.

I take Copper´s point, but the talk about things like betting helps me to remember that it´s not something I think would work for me - eliminating the ´wrong´ ideas is just as valuable to each person as discovering what might work for them.

Must admit I'd prefer the talk of gambling and bingo to be on a seperate thread. I've had problems in that area and it is hard to keep reading about people's wins without wanting to sign up myself! Also from experience I know how easy it is to lose a lot of money that way - I don't like to think we could be encouraging someone to start a very bad habit.
I take your point, and I've got to admit I'm always wary of gambling sites (only use the ones that I'll get cashback from and don't spend more than they'll give me).
However, I just don't see it as being workable to have a whole load of threads.
This is my opinion. There are many others like it but this is mine

I am a professional ebay seller. I work hard at my job, I love my job, if you think it's silly that's your problem not mine. :p

Good point well made ... people really do need to be careful in this area. I think there is one person attempting to do the challenge via Poker but they are very clear about warning people how much money could be lost and to be very careful about getting involved at all. The people doing Bingo seem to be playing loopholes but it should definitely come with a strong health warning. Hope you are not put off the thread and keep on with the challenge.

You can also add products that aren't in the amazon catalogue :D

Just reread this and realised the significance of this bit ... Thanks again. Definitely food for thought (although I have to admit my head is swimming with the things at the moment ... one more thought couldn't hurt could it ).

  • Hi Piggles,

OP said no rules so up to you !

My own personal opinion would be that I would set myself a start date with £100 in a tin. All items bought with this £100 would be closely recorded with regards to starting price, sold price, costs involved etc...

However anything I have in the house that I sell would just classed as no initial cost. So if I sell a second hand coat for £10, it would be £10 - selling costs = profit.

Same if someone gives me something they no longer want - no initial cost to me so all profit.

    Thats only my view.

Well done on your sale - great stuff. I would be shouting from the rooftops !

Clurbur85 - what a great motivational goal ! Good luck
nikki2804 - I have just listed some stuff on ebay too so fingers crossed we both get sales
nixinixi - I have young kids too - lets hope we can get making money in 2010 !

Thats what I would do too, start off with the £100 in tin and go from there, count things you already have that are just taking up space at home as profit, cos if you couunt what you initially bought them for and they are used you will inevitably make a loss unless you are very lucky and its sought after. Anything you buy now to sell on should be taken out as costs.

I don't find it hard to sell things, I have been known to do bootsales, ebay, greenmetropolis etc what I find hard is keeping the profit separate and not dipping into it ANG keeping the motivation going? Any tips on either of those things???

coool u made laugh sooo much i nearly wet myself ....... umm maybe you've got an idea there ....... god no i'm joking
  • just rereading and thinking I should clarify...what I mean is if you bought a dress 5 years ago for £50 unlikely you'll make a profit on it now so just count what you do make as as buckshee towards your target if you know what I mean!!! btw how do you subscribe to a thread? I would like to subscribe to this one but can't see how too. May have already been mentioned but you can sell paperback used books for £3.00 a time on greenmetropolis, its easy and free to list, can't say I have sold many through them one now and again is the norm but still better than nothing and if they are only hanging about anyway, can always list them on ebay or amazon and/or take them to bootsales as well.....not that I have tried amazon? Does anyone sell on there? Is it worth a shot? Just found musicmagpie online too, looks like they don't pay much for used CD's etc but a good comparison tool on there for selling on your mobile phone.
