Well I've felt a little disillusioned over the past couple of days. I have literally spent hours a day researching items that sell well on ebay and then looking at cheap wholesale suppliers - but it seems to me that there's not much profit to be made this way. Individual items that sell well aren't that cheap wholesale (I know a couple of people on here have made excellent profits this way, but I'm thinking they must be very experienced buyers/sellers). When I have found cheap wholesale - there are powers sellers on ebay with shops and 1000s of positive ratings who I'm guessing have cornered that market.
So just wanted to (without being negative) warn inexperienced buyers/sellers to make sure they do loads of research before jumping in with a big order. I've learnt the hard way - have £45 worth of stuff I bought that I'll be very very lucky to get my money back on.
So I've decided that the best bet is picking up stock at car boots and selling on. The cheaper the outlay, the better the return (obviously). And although its frustrating because its not the time of year for carboots, I'm going to spend Jan selling my personal stuff and have a massive clear out (afterall, this is all 100% profit) and then will attack the car boots in Feb.

Today's Updated List. I've been amazed at the response from European bidders for my ebay items. I've had sales and questions from Lithuania, Poland, Germany, France, Croatia and Spain.
I'm also looking for a cheap source of padded envelopes and packaging materials. I have already used everything I can find in my house. Don't get disheartened as all research is good research. You are now in a position to more accurately decide on your course of action and you have also acquired knowledge that people who have not looked into the areas you have are without. There are more wholesalers in this world than ebay would suggest (in fact I find a lot of ebay wholesale is really semi retail). Armed with what you know you may bump into some bankrupt stock or police auction etc. which would allow you to realise a profit in these areas ... or you know enough to discount them completely. All good news ultimately.
As you build up your capital from selling things you want to declutter etc. you will also be putting together a stake that will allow you to do deals that would not otherwise be possible. You will also have time to practice selling techniques and channels for when the "proper" business starts. Be as inventive as possible in marketing the stock you have already and get back as much as you can from it (who knows you may turn a small margin!), dust yourself off and hit the brainstorming and research again. So I have to have a word with myself every now and again to stop thinking what I can't do!! I don't know if anyone else has this issue. :-)
I have to say I set up a small business which we operate on a sunday at a particular car boot. It works. It was simple. But we were lucky with the pitch. I can't do any more because it doesn't support our family life.
Kids party organising / catering is good. You need to research on food / hygiene regs etc and get your certificate but its a doddle really if you have the space etc.0 -

Interesting about the European response, I need to do more research on this re postage charges and legal status etc. I spoke to my brother the other day and he has a nightmare getting English language books where he is and despite being fluently bilingual, he likes to curl up and read a book in English when he can.
Obviously it depends on what you are selling, but you can get bubble wrap in huge rolls and thick brown packing paper rolls (also huge ... you didn't want space in your house to live in did you) pretty cheaply if that helps at all.

not even off the mark yet but have been sorting things of my own to list on ebay..need to make £100 in the first place! but thats my intention...then have a florida holiday which is all paid for..but will need spending money! although not much

Good advice re business link and trade shows. Everyone has the issue of slipping into thinking what they can't do ... it is a battle to be fought head on. All the issues you encounter are opportunities to think inventively and find solutions others, even experienced in the field, may not have arrived at. Issues and difficulties are also barriers to potential competitors who don't have the over riding power of your will to overcome them."I hear and I forget. I see and I remember. For. Those of you wishing to buy new goods to sell on, be warned it's a hard Market to crack. If you read some of my early posts you will se I advise that I only really deal in second hand goods now. There are plenty of avenues to pick second hand goods from , and the profit margins are vastly greater IMO.
