Comet delivery guys ripped my lino.

My new washing machine arrived today from Comet and it was quite tricky fitting it into the space under the sink. As I was signing the delivery note I noticed the lino had been ripped. When I mentioned it the delivery man said 'Yes it has a bit'. I said 'Were you going to tell me?'. 'Of course' he said!

To be honest I was a bit annoyed- mainly that they didn't tell me before I'd signed it all off- so were they actually going to tell me at all?!

Then he said that he'd noticed the kitchen lino is already ripped in a separate area from a different occasion and I agreed it was but that I couldn't see his point! Then he insisted on taking a photo of the lino where i had damaged it in a separate place! He brought out some sort of damage form for me to sign.

I feel a bit of a cow! It is not a large amount of damage but it is a tear that wasn't there before and I'm annoyed that they tried not to tell me!
Has anyone here complained about damaged flooring from delivery people? Or am i being over the top?! Do Comet or other companies give you some money towards damage?

A relative of mine has just fought with comet for 10 weeks to get a faulty cooker fixed or replaced and it was only after it had been reported various places and legal advice had been sought that they finally gave in. I dont fancy your chances but I wish you the very best of luck.

Worth having a chat with their helpline.

That's if it is where it's going to show, or rip more.

    Otherwise, I'd not bother.

I'm sure it was a simple accident.

But if it looks a mess, then of course get them to replace/recompense you.

Don't forget, if they do start being 'funny', you've probably got legal expenses cover on your home insurance, which will get a soliciter letter sent to them & all that goes with it.

Very unhelpful. The customer service man said 'riiiiiiight' when i told him what happened in an I- don't-believe-you tone of voice. Back at the depot the men said the floor was already ripped! This isn't true.
Do you think they get into trouble- why would they lie? Don't want to make trouble for two guys just doing their jobs.

Think I'll have to write to head office and ask for something towards the cost of a new lino.

i have spent £700 at Comet this month!

I wish you joy with your Comet complaint. I think their after sales service is dire. We had an expensive new cooker from them back in mid-August and the oven light was cracked. We've chased them twice for a replacement. On both occasions they lost the paperwork to order it and it's now mid December and we're still waiting. Once they have your money they couldn't care less.

A vinyl flooring is very delicate and prone to tear when heavy items are moved about on it. I would be very surprised if Comet haven't got a waiver in their delivery agreement that says they will do their best to be careful, but they aren't responsible for damage.

I see your point. It is the hoping-she'll-not-notice and deny-all -knowledge attitude which makes me cross. i have spent half my monthly wage in their store this month!

I think Dander is probably right:eek:
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.
  • Unfortunately you when you signed, there would be a condition waiving their liability to damage. It was your responsibility to check they didn't cause damage.

If you spotted it before you signed, they would have insurance in place to deal with damage on site, and you would have got it sorted.
Now you haven't really got a leg to stand on. The best you can do is to threaten to take it to watchdog, and damage the company name, in the the hope of them doing something about it to shut you up!

It is extremely easy to rip vinyl flooring. I managed to rip ours when I was installing a new dishwasher just after we had new vinyl laid in the kitchen. I don't notice it now.
In any event the vinyl has aged very badly and now needs replacing after only about 5 years. It was quite expensive and a good make, but has stretched and wrinkled badly in several areas. Hey ho, you live and learn
I can afford anything that I want.
Just so long as I don't want much.
