I would argue that someone's spelling ability (or lack of) has no relationship with their knowledge of a subject.

The subject he/she is talking about is words...

    1. It take 16 weeks to train a tube driver from scratch.

    2. Seems to be the only valid reason so far.

    3. So are many jobs that pay much less.

Well, I get a fair bit more than a Tube driver, but I had to train for six years in total and have several years job experience.

Basically it's down to a strong union, and weak Government.

    Here comes the irony;

Ignorance - is the state in which one lacks knowledge.

Knowledge you're lacking here is how to spell.

    ignorance
    experience
    balanced

All three are easy to spell words and they are far from typing errors.

Can you name the possible condition that may have caused those errors?

    No.

Are we really discussing whether a train driver could be a surgeon? What a pointless conversation. As above, a surgeon's role is much more complex, tricky and difficult than that of a tube driver. Hence why their salary is 5 or 6 times higher. You're basically agreeing with a 'lefty' White Horse. Oh dear.

No it's not just down to a strong union - it's down a certain skillset too.

You need to pass a skills assessment ie English comprehension of a complicated subject, mechanics and mathematics logic, concentration test, reaction test and then these tests are followed by a structured interview. If you fail any of the above then you do not move onto the next stage of the assessment. An assessment will often start with ten people and end with one !!

The interview isn't to decide if you are the 'right person' to employ but if you have the necessary attributes that if they were to employ you, could you cope with the shifts, the solitude, the training (which can last over a year and includes rules, traction & train faults, routes and a minimum amount of driving hours) and the very rigid rules and regulations that have to be learned and applied every day and must NOT be broken. They must also be excellent communicators and able to cope under stress with a calm, thoughful personality.

When there are vacancies for tube/train driving roles there are thousands of applications but it ends up with approximately 1 in 300 making it through to the training and not all of those complete it.

So, the argument that anyone can drive a train is simply not true. You need a certain skillset and if you haven't got that, then you will not be employed as a driver.

How do I know this ? I am a train driver and have worked very hard to attain my position and enjoy both the rewards and the responsibilities.

I am sure that anyone on here who regularly travels by train are pleased that the train is being driven by a well trained safe driver.

Apologies for digging up this old thread but it had an obvious interest to me and I wanted to add to Zelie's thoughtful and intelligent posts.
