Why do tube drivers earn twice as much as bus drivers?

  • i'd like to see them resign - because for all their protests, they would NEVER be able to earn that salary working elsewhere. And they know it.
  • I wonder if there will be the usual threat of a strike over Xmas this year..

Unfortunately there is very little relationship to the amount of training and skill you need to do a job and pay.
  • As a Londoner who uses the Tube I am glad it is driven by well-paid, properly trained people with good working conditions and low staff turnover. Somehow I don't fancy the thought of getting on a train staffed by minimum wagers who hate their jobs, customers and employers.

I'm really struggling to understand the hostile tone to many posts and the pointless comparison of completely unrelated jobs.

  • there is no justification for tube workers to be on more than 25k. that should be the absolute max.

they should all get 50% pay cuts and we should all get 40% price reductions (the other 10% saving going to improvements). Personally, if they all resign, I would put up with no tube whilst they train new drivers.

Please state your job title, description of duties and salary and a one paragraph justification of why you're worth that much.

The comparison between bus and tube driver is a fair one. Still cannot see why one pays substantially more than the other. I am making no judgement as to whether a tube drivers pay is good, bad or neither.

Comparison between Underground drivers on other systems across the world would be more logical. Or even between national rail and Underground drivers.

As has been pointed out (very calmly and reasonably) by a Tube driver on this thread, it's difficult to compare without knowing salary breakdown details of basic/shifts/overtime etc which may differ for the varied bus companies operating in London.

That's already been shown to be woefully incorrect.

If you want to make an empty headed rant, at least get some of the 'facts' correct

I haven't seen anything anywhere on here which states the basic pay for bus-drivers. I regularly see job ads on the buses themselves in London offering exactly that basic pay. I have also seen info that states that drivers "can" earn "up to" £500 a week but I suspect that quite a lot of unsociable shifts might have to be included to qualify. Most bus services in this city finish at 1am so any driver would need to run a car just to get to and from work and that might be tricky even on £500 a week before tax.

You might see my original post as an "empty-headed rant" but I saw it as an opinion, to which I am entitled, just as you are but I generally try to be civil when voicing mine and suggest you consider doing the same some time
  • The levels of anger most professions seem to induce in others is actually quite interesting
