I guess people do vent their frustration at tube drivers.. they've got a job that pays pretty well in comparison to similar jobs yet they still regularly find reasons to strike. When they do go on strike, it effects millions of people. If the bus drivers decided to strike, they'd probably just get replaced. If I decided to go on strike i'd be given one months notice and a bad reference

I don't have a stressful job. I'm educated but without outstanding grades. If I do my job exceptionally badly, it is possible that people might die, but it is fairly unlikely. I also get paid way more than a teacher does and have annual payrises several times higher than inflation. Is that fair? Nah, probably not. Life isn't fair though.

One day, i want to earn as much as a tube driver. Without the rubbish hours or squished people.
  • exactly - people hate tube drivers because not only are they well overpaid - they don't stop moaning and striking until they get more.

lets say a tube smashes into the platform, and the driver who is drugged up on coke and meths opens the door the wrong side and the people packed in like sardines all fall out and are killed. if TfL try to sack this man, the rest will be on strike in solidarity.

remember that joker that was off sick for a year, and they caught him playing squash? when they sacked him, they all went on strike.

they are a hateful bunch of moaners, doing a pi55 easy job that at least 99% of jobseekers could do with mimimal training. They try and justify their massive salaries with talk of seeing suicides and unsocial hours. here is some news for you - YOU DON'T LIKE THE HOURS, DON'T TAKE THE JOB!!!! you know the hours before you even apply!!!!

Plus, there are loads of drivers who have never seen a suicide. and quite frankly, so what if they have. Its another well known fact that people jump in front of tubes. You don't want to see it, don't become a tube driver.

    Hateful moaning overpaid wasters.
  • The levels of anger most professions seem to induce in others is actually quite interesting

Can we be clear - tube driving is not a profession!!! it is an unskilled manual job.

a doctor, lawyer, architect etc, they are professions.
  • using jobs and professions interchangeably here but am happy to use any particular terminology

point basically stands that it seems most people find the work that other people do completely unworthy, which is quite interesting

Another tube worker here and must insist that all the driver bashing stops, that is the exclusive right of us signallers! Just kidding, on a serious note over the years I have noticed a lot of contempt for ourselves especially in cyberspace, the worst thing is peop0le demean the skilled and demanding jobs that all of us frontline staff do. Who here would be really be happy working in environments where you constantly get told by people that you will be getting stabbed when they return in a bit? How many people here have had the experience of dealing with a jumper, when you have had to see his body parts scattered on the track then having to comfort him, telling him he was going to be ok when you knew full well he'll be dead in a matter of moments? These are just a couple of incidents that I dealt with in a short time working on stations and I'll tell you this: my faith and asumption in the goodness of people was seriously eroded.

So much for the demands of automation, what about when the 2005 bombs happened? Who were the first people to run into those tunnels without posing any questions as to what happened or without any thought to thier own safety? I spoke to someone that went into a tunnel and he was incredibly modest and even felt embarrased at his award.

One thing I have learnt in my working life prior to joining LUL is people will grumble and moan at poor pay and conditions or even let managers play them against other, at least we stand by each other and it reflects by how we are compensated.
Signaller sticking up for drivers? Anyone who knows the railway will know that this counts for something.

Actually, if you wanted an example of something where railstaff will NOT stick up for colleagues, you have picked the best example. Someone high on drugs or drunk? Railway men and women will feel very sorry for the individual and if they have an inkling at messroom level, they will try and help the individual. But if they don't sort themselves out and get sacked for working under the influence, nobody will come out in support.

It is probably best described as a craft, something we seem to have lost respect for in this country.

Obviously if you are sick, suing someone or having a building built, you will respect the relevant professions. If you travel by train, you will probably want someone capable to do the job.
