    I've been Money Tipped!
Thinking about this, there did used to be a conductor ona bus too: so each bus had a higher staff to passenger ratio and cost to run.

I think that there should be conductors still.

Bus drivers used to be mines of information, happy to point you in the right direction in a strange area, or to tell you where to alight (is that right?). I find it sad now that sofew drivers no the barest details beyond there route (many not even knowing landmarks), also sadly, some do not speak very good English, not understanding questions or being able to reply to them.

I think it must be a horrid job: some buses I've got on at school time in Lodnon have been frightful: weapons, yelling, throwing food, smearing ketchup over seats.....

    I wouldn't want that job.

It's not just tube drivers, any train driver within the UK is almost certain to get paid more than the bus drivers in their area. Probably a good reason as to why train fares are much higher than buses.

Train drivers usually get £45k [as seen in advertisement for jobs]. They do 4 days/week.

Compared to that, Eurostar drivers get around £70k. Mind you then, Eurostar is automated. Drivers are just there in case of emergency only. But they need to be fluent in French & English.
Happiness is buying an item and then not checking its price after a month to discover it was reduced further.

Are you seriously comparing a surgeon's work with that of a train driver's?

    No.

I was making a point that you can sum up any job by stating one or two things that they do in a list fashion and it doesn't give any real insight as to what they do. At no point did I compare a train driver to a surgeon in terms of complexity: a surgeon's job is clearly a lot more complex.
there is no way that more people in this country could drive a tube than become a surgeon. no way. they are one and the same.

Are we really discussing whether a train driver could be a surgeon? What a pointless conversation. As above, a surgeon's role is much more complex, tricky and difficult than that of a tube driver. Hence why their salary is 5 or 6 times higher. You're basically agreeing with a 'lefty' White Horse. Oh dear.

Cleaver, you obviously don't live in London. If you did, you wouldn't be so quick to defend the overpaid, qualification-free, workshy, militant chancers that drive the tube trains.

I've spent long periods down there for work, so have used the tube network quite comprehensively.

I'm not saying they are rocket scientists or anything. Zelie said that it required about 6 months training and that you have to have skills in engineering, understanding about security and safety amongst a load of other stuff. They work random hours, have to live in London and I just can't bring myself to hate them with the passion that people on here do. Would I set their wage at £40k? Probably not, maybe a bit lower. Seems about right though.

But as I said before, if it's that easy and well paid go and do it yourselves.

    Here comes the irony;

Ignorance - is the state in which one lacks knowledge.

Knowledge you're lacking here is how to spell.

    ignorance
    experience
    balanced

All three are easy to spell words and they are far from typing errors.

I would argue that someone's spelling ability (or lack of) has no relationship with their knowledge of a subject.

Tube drivers when training are on a basic of about 12 - 14k Their money is made up of unsociable hours pay, shift work OT and other bits and pieces once they pass their training.

I wouldn't like to have to be at a depot at 04:30 in the morning getting a tube out of work until 01:00 in the morning.

All members of staff have to now sign a drugs and alcohol form which if broken will lead to instant dismissal even office staff have to sign this like I did when I did IT work for LUL.

I just wish that I had a union with balls to stand up for the working man. Good luck to them get it while you can.
