  • We are fortunate in the UK to have good access to consumer advice.
However, I have discovered that if goods are purchased in other EU countries, the rules appear not to apply.

I have just made a complaint to Sony about a faulty laptop,(the surface has worn off the keys after only 15 months) and when I mentioned the 'Fit for Purpose' rule, I was met with mocking laughter from their Customer Services Dept. Apparently "physical" damage is not covered by warranty - in other words, if the machine stops working, they will repair it, but if the paint wears off, they blame the user.

Does anyone have any experience of complaining about faulty goods purchased elsewhere in the EU?

We recently took a fairly disastrous 4-day break with National Holidays, which I then compained about. We got back on 27th August, and (due to health reasons) I didn't put the complaint in until 23rd September. National Holidays are refusing to even look into any of the issues because there was a gap of over 21 days, which is against their regulations. Can they do that?

  • On 2/12/2014, I decided to do a big Christmas Purchase from the big shop Currys . Now it cost me a lot of nerves and a time.I choose Panasonic TV but did not have cash and paid £500 with my credit card and every month I must pay £46/ with this plan I just catted my head, but I did it.After this purchase I went to my country for private reasons and when i returned i noticed that TV is not work.
What happens next, on 19/02/2015 I went to Currys and returned the TV because it smells burnt, the speakers do not work and others things too, I received a note to one week to come and take a TV but nothing. 4 weeks I went to Currys permanently but without result. They only shrug and comrades of knowhow call me just let me know that there are no parts .
Today is 15/02/2015 ,they take from my account £46, for what? I can not believe I can to do nothing, only wait but till when? I have no nerves , at home my children complain I'm just devastated, this is a lot of money, a lot a waste time.
Please tell me ,what is my right?

  • Thanks a lot!
  • Hi,
We purchased a second hand land rover from a car dealership for £16500 on Saturday 10th September. We had been told it had gone through their 121 check process and was a perfect example of the model. We drove it home and half way all the warning lights came on and it went into limp mode. I immediately phoned them and they told me it was because it had stood for a while, if it continued to phone them back. It did continue and not trusting car dealers I had it put on a diagnostic machine to find out the problem. It came back with its EGR valves needed to be replaced. So I took it back and thought I'd give them the opportunity to diagnose it themselves, to which they told me it needed a software update! Of course this was part true, so I had to contact them again to tell the I'd had it diagnosed as needing new EGR valves. Reluctantly they had these blanked off. I also mentioned to them there was a rumbling and shuddering sound when it hit 30mph and 50mph and especially when it went up a hill!! They informed me it had been checked by a 4x4 specialist and I just needed to put new tyres on it. Not happy with this I took it straight off their forecourt and straight to said 4x4 specialist and asked what tyres I needed. They informed me it wasn't tyres I needed and suggested I book it in for a health check. I did this and it came back saying the gearbox was worn and it needed a replacement at a cost of nearly £10000.
I phoned the garage to tell them this and they are now saying they don't believe the 4x4 specialist garage??
What do I do?? Am I covered under the consumer rights act as it's definitely not fit for purpose??? Or am I stuck with a car that's going to cost £10k to put right?
    Thanks
    Kylie
