The good old pirate software is riddled with spyware rubish, the places and software people use to download the software is usually the problem not the actual software they get, if they avoid the dodgy p2p software like limewire/ware then it isnt a problem DC++ is all im saying.sco0ter wrote:Microsoft will not update copied software.... And the fact another exploit has just been found in excel means you could end up with security holes all over your system.
Also not true, microsoft have built the WGA thing in to windows updates but not office updates, I know loads of people using a pirate version of office 2003 and are getting updates.
Open office is great for those that cant afford MS office or those that want to remain whiter than white and not use pirate software personally almost everyone uses word and excel pretty much every school uses it and so do most companies I know it isnt the best software and its full of holes or bugs but being able to just save a file and send it to someone who can also open it without having to mess about with it or learn a diferent layout in the software is worth it.
I have used works and word in the past and it isnt easy to swap between apps as things can be done in 1 that cant in another and you end up redoing it in word. so why not start in word? office was brillaint back in the day 32 (i think)floppies for office 4.3 spend all day installing it great especially when all i had prior to that was wordstar an old DOS word processor and a dot matrix printer.0 -

OK, but
"Beta testers may experience problems with 2007 Microsoft Office system Beta 2 products that could potentially result in loss, corruption, or destruction of existing data"
"Beta code is offered "as is," and does not include technical support"
Not for the faint-hearted

Get yourslef a copy of this months Computer Shopper it has StarOffice, OpenOffice and laods of other software on the DVD .. you don't even need to download it.
One other issue about Microsoft Beta software is that it sometimes 'turns itself off' after a period of time and is rarely optimised.
IvanI don't care about your first world problems; I have enough of my own!0 -
The problem with recommending other programs to the OP is that they will/might pose a compatibility problem with the school?
I know for a fact that students who have pc access (which is a large percentage nowadays), normally continue Excel or Powerpoint projects started in school, at home and then take back into school to work on again.
I can see issues if home and school are not running the same programs and this may well put the OP's daughter at a disadvantage.
I know this ups the cost of the machine, but you have to weigh up the educational benefits too and not just the financial ones I think?
Kids. Who'd have 'em? They always cost you don't they?
Edited to add - I'm not familiar with the other programs mentioned so I don't know the ins and outs of any compatibility issues there might be, I just thought I'd throw my thoughts into the ring too as a parent of a lad who often has to do school work at home.0 -
Wombat wrote:You can copy them to floppy disk, CD (if you have a CD-Writer), USB Pen Drive and copy into the new PC. Or set up a network with a network cable and copy them over that way. Or take your hard drive out of your old PC, instal it into the new one as a slave drive and copy from the slave to Master drive.
No floppy or cdrw in this old comp and I am not sure I about how to set up networks etc and as for the other thing about taking hard drives out etc I wouldn't even know where to start lol don't know what they look like for a start, ha I feel like I'm becoming a slave to this whole computer thing, maybe I should just pay more and go get a ready set up package from Currys or somewhere at least it'd all be on there ready for me sigh. Anyway Wombat thanks for all the info I will probally end up having to email all the docs I want to keep to myself and upload all the photos to truprint to keep them there god this old comp is so slow and being on dial up it takes ages and crashes a lot.

Thanks CPU yes my youngest has to use excel at school and powerpoint, I personally have never used either and don't know how to or what use to put them too (old school pen and paper ledger keeper here lol). Also eldest daugher is at uni and has to give powerpoint presentations so I am now at the point where I think you are probally right and as I said above I think I may have to search for the cheapest set up I can find that already has Word loaded on it. My comp I have now is only 16gb and 128ram and keeps crashing, we have an old second hand crt screen which is scratched and two speakers which dont work!! eek. However we have a good printer but that doesn't have a usb connection so would hope to find a computer I can connect that to with a parallel port system. Anyway guys I'd like to thank everyone for their help and kind offers of help etc. I will have to try and search the net for a cheap package of flat screen and computer can't really affort more than £400 maybe we'd be better off getting a laptop.

TaBunny. As I see it. If you want to have Powerpoint etc the your options are to either
1. purchase MS Office at the Teachers/students price (post 19) or
2. get a copy of Office 2007 beta which can be downloaded (post 24) or
3. 'MS Office Professional Plus 2007 beta 2' can be found on the disc that goes free with this months PC Advisor. (That expires in Feb 2006 but gives you the opportunity to get someone to buy it for Christmas)
The fact that it is the 2nd beta should mean that the average user will have few if any problems with it.I'm Glad to be here... At my age I'm glad to be anywhere!!
I'm not losing my hair... I'm getting more head!!0
