    I work in a shop and whilst I realise it annoys people, we are told to approach customers. I usually just say "Hi, if you need a hand with anything just give us a shout". Because I have to say something but I don't want to pressurise people as I know how annoying it is. If I can see they are getting annoyed I back off. If you pressurise someone into buying something they don't really want, they will probably come back and return it the next day and end up resenting the fact you made then buy something they didn't want in the first place. Also, I break off conversations with colleagues if a customer is waiting as its just basic manners.
