    What a response.

Oddly enough I stopped going there years ago because the staff tend to bother you the second you step inside.
That is precisely what the staff do. I also stopped going two years ago but decided to give them another chance this year. Sadly, I find that the problem has only worsened over time.

I used to run a Body Shop franchise and I would get sent all the pos and staff memos. Included in this was a "tree of service" which basically showed you where you should place your staff to get to the customers at certain points in the store. You would then allocate this postition to each staff member.
They also send out a list of questions to ask customers to link conversation to products. So yes that is why you may be having similar experiences in different stores.

I just think it's hugely intimidating when you can't just happily browse without being hounded.
Like Esqui said, a simple "Hello" will do nicely.
I agree, I find it hugely intimidating and annoying. I understand they have a job to do but when the 4th person comes up to you within 60 seconds (possible slight exaggeration ) and asks you the same 3 questions then it just becomes too much. I used to walk out without buying anything even though I had every intention to shop there.

I've just mystery shopped the Body Shop today. They are meant to acknowledge you within 30 seconds of entering the store, which the one I visited did. They are also meant to put a sample of the product on your skin, offer an additional product and push their loyalty card. So it's the shops themselves not the assistants that you have to blame for this irritation. If they hadn't done this to me today, they would have likely failed their mystery shop.
Hawkins Bazaar also have been mystery shopped recently so again they have a similar target.

I don't generally notice it any more, but did find it irritating last time I was in Game. There was no peace in browsing, v irritating.
30 seconds?! I've had the assistants pounce on me before I had both feet in the shop. How can I help you? I felt like saying by moving out of my way and letting me get on with it. :o And I'm usually very chilled out. :D

The shop owners/managers need to change this or continue to lose shoppers.

I appreciate that it's their job and they are told to do it, and I don't mind being asked if I need help - it's when they won't take no for an answer and try the hard sell that I get annoyed.

I went in there once for a particular lip balm, and they were pressurising me really hard to get another one that was connected to an Aids charity. Fine, good cause and all that but I wanted the other one, just sell me what I want!

I don't like it, I don't like it at all, and I think the shop owners would get more sales if they left people alone.

Yes, have the assistants placed so that they can be approached if needed (do a tree configuration if you like). Nothing is more annoying than not being able to find an assistant when you do need one (probably because they are spending all their time pouncing on the poor browsers in the doorway to the shop), but don't for one minute think that all that stalking is going to make me buying anything - cause it won't, nor will any clever sales talk or any other rehersed obligatory pitches - We are only too well aware of what you are trying to do, and it's not going to work, and it is not good customer service either.
    :rotfl: Very well said.

Although in my case, the one at the door followed me around the shop.:rotfl:

And, as a result, I will not be shopping in there or any other place where I'm practically chased around.
This was the reason I stopped shopping there before. Shame.

:rotfl:I know which lip balm. I had the hard sell. They must be on a commission.

Continuing theme on annoying shop workers....

Me and OH went into Panasonic shop year or so ago to buy t.v.
We had seen the one we wanted and asked the guy details about it.

He kept trying to get us to buy a different one (more expensive) and when we werent agreeing with him he walked off and started talking to another customer .

So we walked out went to Sony, got roughly same t.v for same price with free dvd player and stand.

Not a great way to get people to buy things from your shop :rotfl:

I hate Body Shop too and never shop in there.
Im perfectly capable of looking round a shop myself and if I want help I'll ask.

  • what? not even that spotty assistance stood behind the counter disussing their drunken weekend with their colleague whilst popping their chewing gum who see's you approaching and still insits on finishing the conversation before acknowledging you? lol!

ooooh i have such fun in those shops, i must be the customer from hell lol:rotfl:

Me too. I once had abysmal service such as the above, and said, "Thank god I'm not a mystery shopper" or "You are aware you get mystery shopped, aren't you" Leaving them panicking. I also like to "Apologise for interrupting you" sarcastically if they don't break their convo off of their own accord.

Go out, get a bit of paper from your pocket and stand in full view of the staff and pretend to make a phone call :D
    Squirrel!
If I tell you who I work for, I'm not allowed to help you. If I don't say, then I can help you with questions and fixing products. Regardless, there's still no secret EU law.
