You have to wonder about the timing and motivation of these stories.
A cynic might suggest that they help create a sentiment in the mainstream public which allows the politicians to push through tax increases.
It's bound to happen. This bracket of people are seen to have money. The government needs pots of money. Why, it's a natural fit!0 -
This thread has left me throughly depressed. I earn just over £30k and my partner earns just over £20k. It's highly unlikely that both of us will earn £50k in the near future. Yet technically (if you read these government stats) we are have an above average houshold income now. We are lucky compared to most i suppose.
Yet we cant afford to buy a house in a nice area without severly stretching ourselves. I drive an 8 year old car but manage to save every month. We enjoy our lives but with live within our means. So expensive cars, a big house, luxury holidays are out of the question.
The thought of people earning £100-150k complaining makes me feel sick. but I guess its all relative to the lifestyle you lead. I would like to know what these poeple do for a living though!
Your sick on 50k, my husband and I manage to scrape in 25k a year we both drive miles to work and spend a fortune on petrol we have teenage children as well. Last year we took a pay cut of 20k, yes we are poorer but we have learnt to live to our means. Husband said last night he would have to work overtime during christmas and wouldn't I like the extra money, my heart sank I would rather have him with me, life is too short and money isn't everything and it certainly hasn't made me any happier. Needless to say he won't be working any overtime we continue to be frugal and happy.0 -

To be fair, no-ones complaining..it's more about how you feel.
I don't feel wealthy, I don't feel I live a wealthy lifstyle at all (man...I carry a flask around with me when I go up to London) but I know what we spend each month on our chosen life is deff not 'poor' by any stretch....and we have had years of very low income too.
I read a thread on DFW from a poster who was brave enough to post his SOA. His household income was just a little short of 6k pcm. He took the digs and didn't dig back or take offence...he just said it how it was.0 -

1)Local Government (Management Grades)
2)Banking
3)Civil Service (Management Grades)
4)Doctors/Dentists/Consultants
5)MPs and MEPs (especially when you take all the 'perks' into account)
6)Lawyers/Solicitors
All of whom are likely to find the funding for their jobs cut after the next election..... so I wouldn't change jobs just yet!
The majority of people I know who earn OK are self employed...not contractors or freelance type of self employed but own business. They have bad and good years but the possibilities to earn well from ones own efforts seem, to me, higher than being PAYE much of the time. It may be that I don't know as many PAYE people so it's only my own micro world view.
The downside is that you take 100% of the loss if anything goes wrong.0 -
You and me both Bendix. Perish the thought that one might reveal financial information when asking financial advice on a financially related website. Mind you, I never received any criticism when I was on my uppers in the DFW, just when I sorted out my finances, went contracting and started earning a significant wedge. After that I was followed around by all manner of weirdo's.
It's gotten so bad that when I dare even mention the thought of buying a shop or a BTL I'm assaulted on all sides by ne'er do well's*.
* I exclude Dopester from this, who always provides fair advice.
That's not true DD.....though the shoe shop wasn't the greatest idea , it was only the opinion of a few...I mean, what's to stop you doing it anyway?
But, I don't think you discussed it much on here anyway. Conrad was thinking of opening a pasty shop and got all sorts of diff views.....I don't think he is going to do it but no harm in getting other opinions is there.?
And weirdos? Not many around at the mo.0 -

As I've always said, 'you'll never be rich if you work for someone else.'
Pity, but that's a fact not likely to change for me!!
Note:- However, seeing as how much bankers and the like earn, there are obviously some exceptions to the rule.0
