Isn't that what these forums are for?:D

Some say they are for finding excellent pizza deals.

I'm keeping way out of this one. I revealed my income in another thread and got shouted down and called obscene and a fatcat.

Evidently, it's outrageous that someone earning a good income should be on MSE.

    Do I feel rich? No.

Do I feel lucky. Yes, but I also believe you make your own luck in the world.

Good for you. You are lucky. But not everyone starts off on an equal footing in life.

You and me both Bendix. Perish the thought that one might reveal financial information when asking financial advice on a financially related website. Mind you, I never received any criticism when I was on my uppers in the DFW, just when I sorted out my finances, went contracting and started earning a significant wedge. After that I was followed around by all manner of weirdo's (have a look at my BTL thread for an example).

True. I was called a liar by several particularly bitter posters. Why would I be on MSE if I earned so much, they said. Idiots.

Of course, the charge then changed to having been born with a silver spoon in my mouth which is ironic, seeing as how i grew up on a council estate in a single parent family, and left home at 15.

I don't know what the issue is about revealing income on this forum. It's like it's a no-no, which is crazy considering the entire raison d'etre of the forum is about money.

No, you're quite right. Some of us had to scramble our way up from severe poverty and social hardship to get to where we are today, by sheer willpower.

Curiously, those of us who did so tend to become savers rather than spenders and more focused on building financial security, rather than flaunting any perceived wealth.

I'm not interested in wealth. I'm interested solely in security and having enough to live the rest of my life in peace, and without recource to the state or any benefits of any kind.

I do not think you are a liar..because you told me where you work :) There are a lot of ''rich people'' who use MSE in some capacity I'm sure, I know a few ''rich people'' who do. I think it entirely possible to ''work your way up'' in this country. My dad did, lotds of people do. BUT I do think that often requires skill or ability not all have, and possibly right time/right place...because a lot of people with those skills don't ''make it''. Also, other people have revealed ''enviable'' incomes and not been on the receiving end of abuse.

You see, this is where the niceness of lostinrates and the grumpiness of bendix part company, but on a civil basis.

Mental or physical handicaps notwithstanding, I personally believe everyone has it within them, but it takes effort and sheer bloody-mindedness. And that's where people fall down (I avoid using the word fail on purpose). They don't want to move out of the comfort zone, and they use an underprivileged background as an emotional crutch which self-justifies them holding back.

Of course, I could be wrong.

    (But I'm not :D )

I think that the original story makes sense. A family income of £100K is not enough to make someone feel rich if they have a large mortgage and cost of living (i.e.: live in London) and 2 or 3 children.

Maybe I get the abuse because I'm so charming with it . . . ?

    Yes, that must be it.

Civilty is great, and disagreement too, and yes, it is where we part company.
    :)
    Mental or physical handicaps notwithstanding,

I found it pretty hard to maintain income while in a coma! I continued to find it hard when I was awake, but couldn't walk or talk. I could earn now. In fact.....:) well, never mind...:o But there ARE circumstances when you can't. If you have, for example, extreme learning disabilities I would suggest your chances of earning large a large salary are diminished. I also think life just sucks sometimes and does things which render people less able in other ways.

    I edited for grace. :);)

I think far more people than think they do have it in them. BUT, luck is relevant, because not everyone can make it to the top, so if theoretically, we were all able, some one able to would still have to (man a check out/work in an abbatoir/be a fireman/carpark attendant/) so...as well as personal ability there is that. It like runners in a race, they can all run very, very fast, only one wins. :) In fact, the sheer bloodymindedness, IS art of what some eople don't have I suppose.
