NCAP kicked off in 1997, according to Wikipedia.
It would definitely fall into a choice item beyond price and economy to run though for those with less. Anything beyond cost to buy and cost to run starts to cost more... like people wanting electric windows or a sunroof or central locking... they're extra.

I've never bought a new car, so I've not paid extra for those sorts of things.

I was caught out and pretty much "had to". My car broke down and I was in a remote area and had to buy another car pretty immediately to be able to get back to work on the Monday (200 miles away). So I bought a new one, based on what cash I had in the bank that day and fuel economy. Bit of a shock when one week later the job finished ... as did the marketplace I worked in, collapsed overnight it did. After which followed the next 6 years of struggling to survive, so it's a good job I never borrowed!

If I'd been poor ... I'd have had to borrow, on the nearest/first/cheapest wreck. And been stuffed a week later.

Being poor removes choice and options.

On that list I'd be poor at the moment, but usually almost average. I say almost average as I never managed to get as far as the savings or holidays because of the cost of keeping the house/basics covered.

But I do aspire to being average at some future point.

What happened to the umpteen hundred grand you got from STR?

Agree, it's a fool's game. Current car cost £2k @ 50k miles and has needed one non-service item in the last 45k miles.

Apart from which, where we live, at this time of year, any car is caked in mud within days of being cleaned, so something lovely soon looks quite similar to the average dung spreader!

That's for a house. I have to pretend it doesn't exist or it might become tempting to touch it, then I'd not have enough for a house and I don't expect to ever be able to get a mortgage in my lifetime.

It's also a statement of my life overall to this point - and how I am living right now (within my income).

I'm enjoying this thread. I'm not too sure where we sit, because although our income is small, we have a paid-for house, some land, plus enough in the bank to have some choices. That's what I'd call feeling secure, but it isn't the same as feeling well-off, especially as future earnings look likely to remain modest.

PS.On LIR's washing machine scale we're wealthy, but if one lives with mud and carp as part of the daily routine, more emphasis goes on this area. Put it another way, would you use the same machine for your clothes and the ferret bedding?:rotfl:
  • [Sort of my point to you in the past: you can;t tell someone's money (not that league money) just by looking at them or reading their posts. This dissappoints some, mind you.;) Often whats flash ain't paid for cash.[/QUOTE]

Reminds me of the Channel 4 programme " Secret Millionaire". I think nearly all the 'stars' of the show looked just like any normal Tom, !!!!!! ,or Harry. I'd walk past them in the street and not know any wiser.

Definately the case in my workplace.Full of mangers who are absolutely clueless and can't make a decision to save their lives. They have so much brown stuff on their hooters it is still dripping. It seems the thicker you are, the higher you climb here.

Yes, but the rampant price rises then made things much more difficult for those who bought in the following years.

    I completely agree with you.

My point was that I would never blame anyone else for getting in to financial difficulties.
