I appreciate that some of the staff have to work, and of course it is a shame that they have to work on Boxing Day. Perhaps the stores should stay shut on Boxing Day instead, and just open on the "normal" days.

I'd be happy if those staff that have to work on the day of the sale had the opportunity to put items aside. But why do the staff that aren't working that day get a head start? Surely Boots are making LESS out of selling to them than they would out of selling to other customers. The staff already have a good perk in that they pay less for the items than others do. They've chosen to work there.

I was annoyed. I'll no doubt be annoyed again when it happens again this year. But I'll get over it. Boots will get less money out of me, but I'm sure they'll survive :)

Please note: yes, I was annoyed because the items I wanted waltzed out from the store before it was opened to the public, in the hands of people who were obviously not working there that day (and told the people waiting that there was nothing No7 or S&G left at all - I saw these items in their bags). In the grand scheme of things it's not a big deal, but it was frustrating to see when I'd been waiting outside in the cold and then got to see massive empty spaces on the shelves.

If you don't want to work on Boxing Day or if you don't want to miss out on the sale items, maybe Retail isn't the career for you. I often miss out on other bargains because I'm at work and can't get to the shops when they're open, or can't get to my personal computer in time. /shrug

I assume you would think differently if you yourself worked for Boots and had to work on Boxing day. Would you appreciate a customer saying you couldn't get a giftset before your shift?

That same customer would probably be the one complaining if anyone tried to buy more than one of the same thing or complaining that there wasn't full stock of everything.
Staff are just as entitled to buy 50% off items as ordinary customers are, it is the same in every shop.

note to self - write 1000 times - "I must not read the big threads on MSE" First I go on a hunt for hamsters I'd never heard of and now I MUST have a S&G OOTW (see - I can even do the initial thingy now!). I don't know what it is but I'm gonna get one if it kills me lol. :rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:

There are loads of people who say things like its not fair that boots staff get so many perks but if their daughter worked at boots they would take full advantage too! Makes me laughhhh

I used to work for Next and you got your pick of sale stuff on Christmas Eve when getting the store ready. They were then put in the stockroom ready to be paid for after the store closed the next working day after Christmas. It's one of the few perks of a shop job at Christmas - starting work at 5am, having irrate people yell at you because there is a queue to get in, the same irrate folk yelling because there is one door in and one out when it's busy, shoplifters, people shoving you to get to stuff, the mess from customers throwing things on the floor whilst looking for stuff etc and all for minimum wage. Having a few things in the sale before the public get in was one of the only reasons I took the job, as well as needing the money for Christmas for my two babies of course.

I think we should get a pot of coffee on and sit up until midnight Thursday for an online order. I will be so I can buy my own present from the children. A bargain and something lovely under the tree.

This will be my second Christmas working, and this has never happened at my store!? And also you said you don't mind staff getting first dibs.. but you dont want to see it? You want them to go out the back way or something lol :p

Yeh I bloody well do! :rotfl:

Also either Boots employee's are allowed to purchase their stuff at the tils half an hour prior to the advertised shop opening time or they're not - I don't think it should depend on which particular store you happen to be near to. Least then everyone knows where they stand....personally for me it's at the front of the queue, lol!
  • I used to work at WHSmiths and Woolworths and the best offers never made it to the shop floor. Perk of the job :) After all, just because people work in a store doesn't mean they are no longer consumers

Yeah but surely the stock is put aside in the stock room and then purchased at the discounted rate? Everyone knows this goes on, well I do anyway. Have you ever opened the store early only for staff to purchase?

Never mind it's only Soap & Glory stuff. ;)

Absolutely not. When you think about it, do those that "open up" early get paid extra for that half hour? We always put the stock aside and bought it outside or working hours, either before or after a shift.

I expect that Boots do it because once the doors open- there may be nothing left by the time the staff get to their break. And if they are only open say 6 hours on boxing day the staff might only get a 15 minute lunch break. As far as I can see it doesn't matter if the doors are actually open or not- as long as the tills are switched on then things can be bought. And seeing as though staff have to actually be INSIDE the store to be able to open it, seems like the best opportunity. Good for them I say, we get enough glitches to be moaning about not getting a giftset in the sale.
