How do I find people who've moved but might have 'adopted' my cat? Help! :0)?

Hi all you lovely peeps, you!!!
Does anyone know how I can find or track my neighbours who rented the house next to me for about 6 months or so but moved about a week ago? It's because I think they've 'accidentally' taken my cat! (ahem!)
I only know their first names (other neighbours dont know either) but I do know they got married in the summer , he's a trainee policeman (though I dont want to phone them and either 'tip them off' so to speak, in case they move my cat to a friends etc plus it's probably not a good idea to accuse a policeman without evidence! lol) and that they've moved to the next town. The town, whilst not big as such, is still too big to search the streets although I'd like too but know it'd be futile. I'm going to check the electoral role tomorrow but as they lived there for such a short period of time, I dont think they'd of had to fill in any forms. I dont have the landladys number either.
I just want to know she's safe, at the very least, and i'm at my wits end wondering how i'll ever find her again which leaves me heartbroken. I've had her since she was a kitten (she's now 14) and love her dearly. She's always been a favourite with all my neighbours, past and present, as she has a very friendly nature and they cant resist letting her in and giving her 'treats' (not that she needs them! lol) and you cant stop a cat 'being a cat' and I didnt mind as it's good she gets fuss from other people too as i've had 3 kids in the last 5 years which has meant she hasn't had the same amount of attention as normal, obviously.....but you still dont expect people to 'adopt' (using the term lightly!!) a moggy when they know full well she's looked after and can hear me calling to her daily at dinnertime etc.
Sorry, verbal diarrhoea has stopped now lol. Any help is greatly appreciated!!!!
Kind Regards,
Andrea :0)

PS: Don't laugh but do you think a private detective (do they exist in england? lol) would be able to find out where they live? ......I just want my cat back......:0)

Is anybody in their flat now?
You could aske them for the landlady's detail?
    :j
  • Oh Gosh what a horrible situation to be in!
Surely a POLICE man WOULD have registered for the Electoral Roll?? If not then there are definitely private detective agencies who can trace them for you...google I guess??
Good luck and PLEASE post updates.

Did someone see them actually take your cat? Could she have gotten into the removal van without anyone seeing her before they drove off?

What about writing to them? They may have mail forwarding in place.
Explain to them that you are worried as your cat went missing about the same time they moved, don't accuse them of anything, just ask if they saw or know anything that can help you find out what happened to your cat.

Please let us know how you get on.
My first reply was witty and intellectual but I lost it so you got this one instead :D

  • Hi you lovely peeps, you! Thankyou so much for taking the time to reply! To answer your questions......I'm hoping to catch the landlady this weekend when she comes to check on the house but she might not give me their surname or contact details as she may feel it infringes on their privacy but i'm going to ask just in case, fingers crossed.
I wish he wasn't a trainee policeman or i'd of gone straight to the police to check it out......though i'm not sure if they act upon 'assumed moggy nappings' ? Also, maybe he isn't at the point of his training where they teach them how to catch criminals rather than BE criminals! lol
I went to the post office today and told them I had taken in a package for them (ickle white lie!) but they've just moved and do they have a forwarding address that they can pass it on too? They said that no mail is being forwarded and they have no other address.
Nobody saw them take my cat and i'm not 100% sure, hence why I can't go accusing, BUT my cat miawed to get into their house a lot and I know they gave her treats and let her in etc. That in itself is nothing but it's the fact that she went missing when they moved and hasn't been back since and whilst being an outdoor cat, she always comes home. The main thing was that when they moved the woman walked past my house and looked down my drive which was very odd as her removal van was on the other side of our terrace and she had no reason to look down my drive. I thought at the time that she may have been looking to see if I was in and might have dumped a bit of rubbish on our drive......I couldn't think of another reason why she'd be looking down there. She looked twice, at different intervals, down my drive. It's only now that my cats been missing that i've realised that she must of been looking for her to take before they left. If anyone else has a reason for this strange behaviour then please tell me but this, along with their attention for my cat over the past months and the dissapearance of her on their removal day is just too much coincidence for me.
Any other help or advice greatly appreciated and thank you again for all of your replies!!!!! It helps, trust me! :0)
    Kind Regards,
    Andrea :0)
  • Hi - hope you find your cat safe and sound soon :)

Is there any chance she could have got locked in the neighbours empty house after they moved out? Call through the letterbox or something? Maybe when the landlady comes round ask her if you could have a little look around and when in the house try and sneak a peek at the letters that have been delivered while its been empty for a surname.

Also if you know their names, try having a look on FaceBook or friends reunited to trace them.

At work, we use tracing services/private investgators. There are quite a few up and down the country and they don't have to be local to you as most of them will just do a basic search on electoral registers/benefits registerscouncil tax registers etc. Think they charge our company about £40-50 per basic search.

    Good luck

What an awful situation...I do hope you find your baby soon.
I would make up missing cat posters and perhaps post them all around your town and the town that they've moved to stating that she is a much loved family pet. Maybe they will have some sympathy? You could also send a letter to their old house in the hope that their post is being redirected.

Also is the cat microchipped? If so and you went to the police it would be easy to prove that the cat belongs to you. The cat is considered your property so although police may not immediately take it seriously be persistant and insist on somebody checking the couple.

Hope you get her back soon, please keep us informed xx

My £1's on you being mistaken.

At 14 your cat will be close to the end of her days and might have been plucked from the street if she were appearing lost. We had our cat taken from our front garden by a neighbour who thought it was lost/stray/abandoned and in pain (because it looked a bit shabby and had a peculiar miaow). We only got him back as there was a power cut and all the neighbours went outside and she happened to ask "do you know anybody who has a black cat?"

She saw him all shabby/tired looking, he miaowed in his funny way - and she scooped him up thinking he was lost/in pain. She'd kept him indoors for a couple of weeks as she had dogs.

We didn't get ours back long before he finally pegged it.

Have you checked if your cat's in their shed? Or anybody's shed? Or in their house?

Why not phone the removals company and ask the drivers if there was a cat? In fact, go there, to the office, find the drivers (wait if you have to). Say "I think they had a cat, I think it's come home .... did you take a cat to their new house only I'm worried it's come back to their old home ...." while, on the other hand, half giving the message out that it might not be theirs at all and it might be a stray they just fed, but you were worried in case it was theirs.

Sounds daft, but the removal company would have their new address maybe ask if they could forward a letter, (without sounding daft, you may have to leave it unsealed, as sealed it could be anything).
The thing is with cats they always say they own you not the other way around, if there anyone else that your cat has on their feeding route?

maybe with the lady looking down your drive, she may of been looking to say were off, incase the cat carries on going around.

The other thing is post a letter to the address, and hope that their is a mailing system on, as the post office wouldn't really be able to answer you as it could be a breach of confidentitially.

Really hope everything turns out ok for the best.

Put some posters up in the area, good luck with the search. xx
xx rip dad... we had our ups and downs but we’re always be family xx

You could write a letter and see if the landlady would forward it on for you
