a saw would be best; making sure you wear some sort of mask perhaps? This is a good guide:
h**p://w*w.npower.com/idc/groups/wcms_content/@wcms/@resi/documents/digitalassets/diy_insulation_guide.pdf (replace the *'s with tt and w - wouldn't let me post a link!)
It says you will need a saw or bread/carving knife to get a straight cut.0 -
A few important bits..some is outlined in the installation guides but important enough to mention again i think.
SAFETY FIRST:
1) Wear gloves (disposable ones likely to be good enough), goggles and facemask (supplied with this deal i believe)
2) Make sure you wear suitable clothing ..long sleeves and long trouser/jeans. The insulation makes you itch if you come in contact with it.
3) Use a couple of "crawler" boards (planks of wood, old kitchen doors etc etc - anything that is rigid enough to take your weight) and place them between ceiling joists to get around the loft. Make sure you don't stand on unsupported ends of the crawler boards..they'll pivot on the joists and you may end up in the room below if your particularly unlucky! The ceilings below are (usually) made of plasterboard..they won't take your weight.
4)Make sure you have suitable lighting so you can see what your doing (especially if you've borrowed the wife's best kitchen knife..shh i haven't told her yet!). Inspection lamps on a cable get hot...keep them clear of insulation to avoid setting fire to it! Worth having a torch with you as backup just in case the power goes out!
5) If your working alone in the house (or out of earshot from others) take a fully charged mobile phone into the loft in your pocket!
Lofts are dangerous places you can't be too careful!
Lastly:
Please all note to pull your new insulation back from around the eaves rather than laying it tight to the edges - you should be able to feel air coming up through the eaves. That you can feel cold fresh air coming in is good! If you don't do this you may find condensation problems due to inadequate ventilation of the loft space - we get a few issues come up in this part of the forum every time there is an insulation deal!
And another tip...place a broom handle through the middle of the insulation to aid unrolling it
Good luck and enjoy a cosier Christmas!0 -
Time is now 2.47 and just ordered 29 rolls for myself and 20 rolls for my son direct from my local Build Centre Branch...Thanks for the heads up :T0

If you look in your local directory, and contact the store which is closest to you, it seems to work. I contacted my local store about 10mins ago (14:30) after not being able to get thro via 0845 no, nor online. The staff were really helpful in the calculation per/sq mtr, and so everything, including payment and delivery were arranged directly! Even tho they did not have any stock in for the thicker insulation, I was still able to order using the offer. Well Done MSE, and Well Done Build Center! Fantastic offer- Thank you0

does any one know how to cut the rolls into narrower widths ans we have a difficult access to the loft and the 1200 width of the roll just does not fit . . . H E L P please
Don't know about this insulation, but usually it is perforated at approx 400mm intervals to aid cutting/ripping.Use an old saw if you need to,it won't be any good after as it will blunt.0 -
Are most people finding that delivery on this offer is generally not for a while? I want to buy some for our new house but we don't move in until friday, and then we are away for the weekend, so I don't want to risk it being delivered before monday!!0

Well, I ordered 12 x 100mm rolls today via the 0800 number. I then got a call shortly afterwards from my local Build Center confirming delivery for Saturday morning.0 -
Just ordered 30 rolls
Thanks to posters above for a quick route to local tel number and job is done.
Will deliver in January, which suits me as it will probably take me about another 3 years to get a 'round tuit'
Dammit, now I'm gonna have to tidy up the garage by January, hmmmph! The bankers stole my pension (and everyone else's). It should have earned a lot of money, but they took their bonus pot first.0 -
morg, i'd get your order in by phoning your local Build Center quick and worry about delivery later. They told me they will phone to arrange a convenient time for delivery. Bear in mind this thread has had more views than there are rolls available!!
The insulation is perforated for 400mm or 600mm widths ..it's this stuff here: http://guide.rockwool.co.uk/products/building-insulation/roll.aspx0 -
thanks for the kick up the backside andrew, just ordered from the build centre local to the new house. 10 rolls, £10, couldn't be happier!0
