just past driving test today... 18yrs old. ludicrous insurance quotes!

ive been searching pretty much all day and the best quote ive got is around 3.5k on a 2003 golf. its 1.4litres and pretty much standard.

anyone any tips? i cant afford that sort of price it seems totally unreasonable. 2000 is pushing it really 1500 is more what id be willing to pay. what do i need to do? get my dad insured on it then go on his insurance as a named driver? nothing i try seems to make any difference to the price

thanks in advance for any help

A 1400cc Golf made in 2003 will be at least a Group 9 or higher.

You need to look at less risky cars. The price is eminently reasonable because there is a fair chance that you will smash it up, possibly smashing up other people's property and killing/injuring others in the process. Sorry to be blunt but those are the bare facts.

    Will echo that.

If possible sell your Golf, buy a different car to use till you're experienced then your premiums will drop and you'll get a more realistic quote for the car of your choice.
  • theres no way its a true reflection of the cost most of these companies seem to be picking the numbers out of thin air. the range is always about 5000 between every company.

everyone i know at college pays 1500 - 2500 and i cant get a quote anywhere near that. ive tried putting in the price for a corsa and an aygo and the price is the same

    Hi,
There is an insurance company that will save you around 40% but has a small obstacle. You cannot use your car between 11.pm & 5.am.
More than car insurance have a policy called drive time aimed at 18 to 25yr olds. You have a GPS tracker installed on your car so they know if you use it and if you do they charge you between £25-£40 depending on age.
Having a pass plus certificate helps you even more.My lads cheapest insurance quote with pass plus was £1520 on an instalment plan, with more than drive time his quote was £1085

It is a very fair reflection.

As a whole insurers don't make money on young drivers.

    Look at figure 2 here:

    http://www.equalities.gov.uk/pdf/the%20use%20of%20age-based%20practices%20in%20financial%20services%20executive%20summary.pdf

To simplify it, for every £1 taken in premiums for 17-18 year olds, insurers pay out £1.05. That's before the insurer has to pay commission and overheads. In other words, they make a whacking great loss. This persists because a lot of insurers periodically dip into the young driver market - it is an easy way to increase their topline figures. However, when the claims come in they realise they've got their fingers burned and drop out of that part of the market. The insurers who are quoting high premiums are ones who really don't go after the business but will take some on the basis that if they get any business it will be at very good prices.

ive seen that and have been limited in terms of transport for 17 years. if i want to drive after 11pm then i dont want to be paying £40 a journey

anyone else? i doubt every young driver out there is paying 5k for insurance. there must be a way...

You must be patient and 'run before you can walk'. I bet you could at least halve the premium by going for a more modest car.

i doubt it like i said ive tried corsas and aygos and the premium is the same

its a standard 1.4 golf hardly a 6l ferrari. honestly unless it along the lines of a skoda i doubt the premium will change substancially no matter what i bought

I would be amazed if you did not get cheaper rates by choosing a group 1 or 2 vehicle.

    Go here:

    http://www.thatcham.org/abigrouprating/

And use the menu on the right hand side to show group 1 or group 2 cars. give some of them a try.

There's nothing wrong with Skodas by the way. There is a reason why loads of cabbies drive Octavia's.
  • its group 4 / 20. even if i bought a 1 or 2 surely it would still be 3000+?

honestly im beginning to think learning to drive was a waste of time. im not giving up on this though no way im paying for 7 months of lessons to not drive
