Sorry I made a mistake earlier. Obviously the Insurance company could be a Lloyd's syndicate as they might have to deal with brokers. The correct name of the company is Restrospective Insurance DIRECT...

Here is the under insurance thread in all it's glory, note the replies from other MSErs, even Matty had a dig and thats unheard of http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showthread.html?p=26212529&highlight=#post26212529
  • Hi dacouch. Broker is A Plan, insurance company is MMA. My specific job titles don't come up in insurance lists so was under hospital worker, now administrator in public school.

Not the greatest combination in the world...

When you say Public do you mean state or a posh private school? If it's a private school is it a charity or a business
  • It's a state school. (Said public because the choices on their list were public or private).

So come on then. Who do you recommend? I do like to save money though so decent and very cheap would be great!

I think that something very important has come to light here. We could be sitting on a timebomb that could rock the insurance industry to its core.

I think that we should petition MSE to make a public announcement, perhaps we could even persuade Martin to bring the subject up on GMTV.

To all of the millions of people out there that work as teachers, teaching assistants, nursery workers or anyone connected with education or care roles. YOU HAVE ALL BEEN LIED TO !!

When you have been asked to change the use on your car insurance in case you ever needed to take a child or colleague in your car, your incompetent Insurance companies and Brokers have advised you that you needed Class 1 use to cover this. THEY WERE LYING !!

What you really should have done was to take "the knowledge" test, pay out (possibly 10's of £1000's) to get your vehicle plated as a taxi and then purchased Hire & Reward insurance cover. Whatever you may think, YOU ARE NOW A CABBIE.

This really annoys me as there are obviously a few million additional taxis out there that I didn't know about, so why aren't any of you available when I need you on a Saturday night?

Could all of the teachers and their associates please post your phone numbers on here so that the rest of us have got some additional numbers to call when we need a cab. This will be particularly useful during the summer months when you are all available throughout the day.

Is there any way that MSE can get Pastra to declare which Direct Insurer he/she is an underwriter for as many 1000's of their policy holders could be vastly under-insured.

On the other hand, he/she could just be talking total crap.

Rang my brokers. They said the cost would now be £400 . The insurance company only deal with brokers so I can't go to them direct (did try).

Can this be right? If not, what can I do?

That is outrageous. When I had business cover added to my policy it cost a massive £8 extra for 20,000 business miles.

Rudekid you forgot to mention Nannies / Aupairs and anyone else in a similar occupation who will also need Hire and Reward Cover according to the Pastra Direct Insurance Company.

Please do not "dis" Pastra as surely you are aware that he/she knows far more about Insurance than you and certainly knows more than Raskazz.

You mention that some of her companies customers could be under insured, you forgot to mention that some of the motor clients who need class one use are actually probably over insured...

But are you covered properly? If you actually get paid for doing your job, then according to our resident Direct Insurer, you are in fact a taxi driver - did you know this? :D

Seriously though, what you paid sounds pretty normal as you will have added Class 1 use. The OP may just be unfortunate, in that the scheme that they are on does not cater well for any business use, but more likely the OP has been quoted for the wrong type of use.

I should be OK. I never give anybody a lift when travelling on business.
Or, more to the point, there is nobody else who ever wants to go to the out of the way places that I have to
