DWP Flexible new deal scheme

I wonder if anyone can offer advice here. Due to being made redundant a few months back and unable to secure any other work I had to sign on at the jobcentre. Now I have been placed on the Flexible New Deal programme. The advisor has told me that I have a further 6 months to find work before they will have no option but to refer me to a provider (e.g. A4E type organisation). Once with the provider I would have to attend their centre on a full time daily basis for up to a year. Unless I find work or sign off before the course ends. Apparently this Flexible New Deal programme is now compulsory when someone has made a continuous claim for 12 months.

Has anyone heard of this happening or was the advisor having me on? To be forced to attend a programme for that long is ludicrous. thanks

    No, its correct.

If you can't find a job yourself in 12 months (a full year!) then you need help.

    The course is "help".

Or at the very least an incentive to get one.

i will be on this myself next year. the info i have seen has said slightly different things. i have seen info saying that you attend a centre on a part time basis and do 4 weeks work placement during the 12 months. someone else has told me they are on it and do 2 days a week work placement and 2 days in a centre. now there is also your advisor saying it is fulltime. so really the only thing people like us can feel sure about is we will be on it after 12 months and spend 12 months on it. as far as what we will do on it i think we need to be prepared for anything.

It is correct that you can be on stage 4 with a provider for up to 12 months but it certainly won't be full time. The clue is in the name, FLEXIBLE New Deal, so each person's contact time with the provider will be different dependent on how much help and support is needed, it may be telephone contact or face to face. During the 12 month period there is a mandatory 4 week full time work related activity which could be training or a work placement. There is no way that the providers would be able to cope with numbers if everyone had to attend full time for 12 months.
  • Is there anyway of getting out of this?

The providers cant offer any training to benefit me. I normally work in I.T and all they say is we will send you to a Charity Shop to do work and then Maths and English?

Could the european convention on human rights help

    I don't think so.

It really is a question of doing what is required in order to be paid the benefit.
  • The thing that makes me mad is im trying to better my self etc and until i get a job, i need the benefit for food etc.

if it was the case of not needing the money for food, i would tell them to stick it up there rear end.

they know people rely on it and then do things to really pee people off.

ill go and get a sick note from the doctors and go on ESA then. simple.

Fair enough - a few weeks down the line when you are disallowed ESA you will find yourself back in the same position.
