Even if he hadn't signed up to SKY he would still have been able to watch the channel with any old satellite box, when it was free-to-air. So the involvement of SKY is irrelevant.

i have to say i have just read this topic and i have to say even my 2yr old child would understand it is not anything to do with SKY, they simply broadcast channels which companies such as Xtreme choose to broadcast through SKY (as they get a nice share of the total income) so to start blaming SKY is hilarious i would love for you to ring them and explain what you have stated but please if you do can you record the conversation because i would love to hear what they say to you.
  • Hmmm, I personally work at Maplin, and our satellite's, receivers and full kits are selling extremely well this year. We get many people asking if they can pick up Sky on them, but most of them just don't understand, they cannot grasp the concept of Sky being a broadcaster of channels and nothing more, and can't seem to understand why they have align their satellites in different places. That brings me to my point, the British nation are, as I would say, mal-educated, they have not been thoroughly briefed on the whole idea of digital television. Instead, they have had words and ideas thrown at them in a fancy wrapper, I understand what these technologies mean as do alot of people. But for those people, like Aeronut, who haven't fully learnt what it is, it must be difficult. That doesn't mean I am backing him here though, but I am also no backing tris, as I feel it is the pure ignorance and manipulation of the marketing giants that has caused this mess.

Aeronut, you've been caught out, and hopefully, you might learn from it, ring up your local Maplin and just ask for some advice on free-to-air and they will happily give you some knowledgeable advice. 01581 414155 is our store number, give us a call, we would LOVE to help mate.

trisontana, I have no idea why you are going on about this, he obviously doesn't understand the system and is probably feeling a bit embarrased, just move on and let him sort out his own problems. I know you might feel anxious and wanna set it straight for him, or maybe you just wanna win the battle, but get over it mate :D

You're right. It was just that this guy was so sure that he was right and everyone else who tried to tell him was wrong that it got a bit personal for me. As you say , time to move on.

I know that Aeronut has walked away from this discussion, as the result of a massed rank of opinion against him, but I think that many (or probably all) of you were missing his original point (although this was somewhat lost when T&Cs started being quoted).

The original argument was that Sky advertised a package of pay channels and also advertised on the same page on its website "FREE-TO-AIR-CHANNELS- you also get additional channels view the full list here" http://www.sky.com/ordersky/joinsky, which links to http://static.sky.com/images/ordersky/freetoair/free_to_air.html

There are many people in the UK who fully understand the difference between FTA, FTV and pay channels and how they can move from being one to the other, but the vast majority number do not (it appears that Aeronut was one of them). For may people satellite TV = Sky.

I agree with Aeronut and think that Sky should make it clear that the list of FTA/FTV channels that Sky publishes on its website to attract people to its pay package is not fixed in stone and is just a snapshot at one point in time. Nowhere on the main advertising pages (the impenetrable T&Cs don't count) does it mention that an FTA/FTV can disappear or change to a pay channel. Sky deliberately do this though as they like to give the impression that you are getting more for your money (i.e. pay and FTA/FTV) than you are actually getting, and they will word things so that they just keep within the law.

I did find this in the small print of SKY's advert for their "Freesat from Sky" package in yesterday's Sunday Times

"Sky cannot guarantee the availability or content of such channels"

I imagine there is similar small print in their advert for the subscription service.
