Sorry dvd robs just realised you wanted to know about non wireless set up , it does give details on how to connect with a usb / network cable but I didn't get one in the box.0

The instructions in the book (page 18) are reasonably accurate. You need DHCP enabled wizzer, and need to make sure your router is giving them out.
DHCP is.... 3>2>(DHCP or Auto)
The 4>(Print Reports) is quite useful too.... to keep track of where you are.
Enable 64bit WEP on your router with the test phrase '3953'. The 1st key is '51770609e1'.
On the Brother try swapping between OPEN WEP, and WEP WEP (encryption). I haven't quite figured this out myself. Everything else on my network is open or WEP, the Brother gives the impression that there's two types. I can tell you one will work and one won't though...
Not only does our quite clear printer have a FTP server in it, it also responds to ICMP pings, so you can ping it across your network.
>PING 192.168.1.5 (for example). The router will tell you what it has assigned things to, something like DHCP Assignments in one of the belkin admin pages.
Just for the moment wizzer forget about connecting it to XP, get it talking to the router first (which it sounds like you're doing). Don't ever connect it via USB or use the option to configure Wireless from the Brother install-software, that wiped mine and I had to start allover again when the other 3 computers had been fine.
Don't worry, you're not aloneCertainly the downside of the wireless setup on the printer has to be the method in which you enter the keys, I don't like that at all.
Once you have the printer running though XP will recognise it. Oh tell you another thing, XP will report that the device isn't found yet you can print a test page.......
Unfortunately this isn't like configuring an HP Laserjet 4L where it's straight off away. But saying that, wireless is quite new as a technology for printers. Especially for ones costing £60!!
The range on it is quite good too, in a newbuild house here with metal mesh in every single wall (plaster) and it's holding up better than some of the 54g cards.
You'll get there eventually.DHCP. Oh and you also have to turn the thing physically off by pulling the plug out to force some changes, particularly DHCP. (dunno why..)

Thanks for your help - seem to have cracked it!! Not sure what I was doing wrong first time but I've managed to connect by way of Open & WEP encryption.
Haven't got as far as assigning the printer a permanant TCP/IP - I'll see how it goes for the time being.
But thanks once again.

Whilst writing, can you explain why there are 4 wep keys to chose from? Are they just alternatives as I'm using the same wep key (1) for both the printer and a laptop.
ThanksI say what I like, I like what I say!0 -
Hi Wizzer
If you're using XP (and I think you have a Thinkpad) then don't worry too much about the fixed IP address bit, that's more for a network with multiple machines, say a mixture of 98, XP, a printer that may be switched on and off etc.
There are indeed four WEP keys. When you set up WEP on your router, it will list the four keys. When you come to set up your PC/Device you will have the option of specifying Key1/2/3/4. You enter the corresponding key which was generated by the router, against the single key you choose to use your device.
Now that you have the printer 'CONNECTED' to the network, you can now successfully install the software on your laptop. And it'll work!!Before you do that though, go to the printer options menu and select Print Reports, print off the one that lists your network settings, just for future reference.
Hope that helpsAs already said, once the printer is connected just re-install the software on XP and let it automatically find the printer. No worries on the fixed IP as that'll just confuse things in a simple network.
Let me know how you get on? I'll drop in again shortly0 -

staples at crown point in leeds have this model and also a different one for £64.99.
I bought a print server from ebuyer a few months ago for about £25 which allows you to add your existing printer to your network, I bought a Netgear PS101 but it currently showing at £54.
The US robotics on their web site is £44.64 currently.
These are not quite the same as they are fixed wired so you printer becomes part of the network which is good because it does not rely on wireless (and its limitations) but bad if you need wireless due to location.
Most people would not have a location issue to need wireless, it you have an outlet near a PC just plug in.
If you need wireless ebauyer also do a Belkin wireless print server for £45 which will give your existing printer wireless capability..0 -

i dont know if they are still on offer today as its past fathers day. if they are remember to get the £10 voucher which was in this thread0 -
As an addition..
The printer CAN be switched off at night, contrary to the manual. It will keep it's WLAN settings, and it does keep it's time.
Switched on: 7W/h
Switched off (with on/off switch on panel): 2W/h0
