Could it be that the girl went to the head's office and was scratching her head. Whilst she was there, the secretary saw this and had a quick look to check if there were any nits. There were none, so she just went back to class.
If so, it scares me that some people on here think that is a reason to complain to social services. Do people really think that a member of school staff shouldn't have a quick look to check for nits on a 5 year old girl's head? Is this something for which we need qualifications now?
And as for being singled out, what would you prefer to happen when a child scratches their head a bit. Would it be preferable that someone takes a quick look to check for nits, or that the nurse be called in and the entire class checked?0 -
Well my DD came home from school everyweek with Nits when she was 5, and its disgusting, I was in tears many times over sorting it out.
You should be gratefull the school are so on the ball over the situation, having a quick check if a kids itching, so what, I'm shocked that so many people think its a bad thing. No wonder Nits are rife.
Just wanted to add that one little girl in DD's class had Nits that badly that you could see them crawling all over her head, the teachers could do nothing about it, other than send a letter to all parents that they had an outbreak in the classroom, this parent ignored the letter, the poor thing was like that all primary.£100 - £10,0000 -

There have been many tragedys/abuse cases all over the country, and it happens by people kids know and trust Ie Ian Huntley....some members of the clergy, even nursery nurses (not for one min am i suggesting that anything happened other than what the OP has told us!)
My thoughts are if an adult in a trusted position is able to make a 5 year old child feel miffed and clearly uncomfortable...well enough to tell mum....without doing anything naughty then questions need to be asked!
I know you have said that you are not suggesting that anything untoward happened but seriously to even mention that in a thread about a school secretary checking a child's head for nits is madIn my opinion it is ridculous to even suggest involving social services and the education board.
If it was me, I would explain that the lady was being helpful just checking that there were no nits and leave it at that.0 -

A school secretary should not be touching your child full stop.

How dare she!
I would be having more than words.....I would be making an official complaint to social services, education board and let the principle know your doing this!
Teachers are not allowed to comfort a child....seriously, they could lose their job over the head of it......why should a secretary be allowed to touch your child
Teachers are not allowed to even tell you they think your child has nits/lice.....they are only allowed to send out a recommendation from the school nurse advising parents to check their childs hair!!
why was your DD singled out and embarassed in front of her friends???
Grrrrrrrrrrr
This is the exact kind of reaction that has our schools and teachers in the sorry state they are in now.
We're a nation of paranoid parents raising a nation of paranoid children. Absolutley ridiculous.Accept your past without regret, handle your present with confidence and face your future without fear0 -
Yes, I (mostly but not blindly) trust them.
I definitely know when my 'baby' speaks with 'forked tongue'
DD has mild eczema so it may have been that (but I couldn't see any dry skin) so the scratching is a definite maybe.
I don't yet know if I could see one, haven't seen 1 yet (not counting my chickens though).
It actually happened last week but I just have a little niggle telling me that something needs to be addressed so I think I'll probably just check with her in the morning.
Thanks all
Is it possible that they were checking other children, one at a time, but your DD didn't see it happen.
They may well know which child has nits but in order to make that child's parents aware they have had to cast the net wider.
Sort of, "we know it's child A giving everyone including us adults nits, but we can't pull him/her in on their own so we'll choose a few we know are clean to raise awareness"
Hoping that all the children they checked will go an tell mummy and mummy will have a look for herself.
As for someone above saying it's OK for a teacher to look, but not a secretary, what's all that about? Who do they think take temeratures, clean wounds, administer medicine etc when the children are a school, certainly not the teachers!Accept your past without regret, handle your present with confidence and face your future without fear0 -
As a home educator, I'm not pro-school, but mumoffour77, you have seriously gone waaayyyyyyyyy over the top with your dramatics on this thread, imo.
To suggest that the secretary could have abused or bullied the little girl seriously made me :eek::eek:There is something delicious about writing the first words of a story. You never quite know where they'll take you - Beatrix Potter0 -

Do you actually work in a School? My Mam is a nursery nurse and has been for Over 20 years.
What would you do if a child had soiled themselves and their parents weren't in to come and change them, would you want your child to sit in soiled underware?
The other day a child ran hell for leather into a wall and had a massive bump on his head and all he wanted was a cuddle.
Its ridiculous the things teachers have to put up with. No wonder this country is wrecked and ruined0 -
I think the only way to go is to teach kids through bullet proof glass and interact with them through the medium of mime. With subtitles. Then everyone will be safe. Simples.0

I had the (slightly embarrassing) scenario recently, of my 5 year old really scratching her head, and saying in a loud voice "My head feels itchy" while we were waiting (with loads of people present), for her to go into the classroom.
She hasn't got nits, but we all suffer from dry skin. I ended up rubbing some olive oil (later on) in her scalp which seems to have alleviated the problem. There have been several outbreaks of nits at the school, so perhaps if there was excessive head scratching, they may have had a discreet look.0 -
