Your reasoning is a bit flawed to say the list. You are obviously out of touch with the reality of today's working practices....
Your make false assumptions:
- that everyone's working hours are 9-5
- that everyone works full time
- that everyone works for an employer
- that everyone's remunerations is based on hourly rates
- that nobody is allowed to have breaks during work
and someone has already mentioned various types of leave

To bring the thread back on course and as much as it galls me to agree with woody01, there is some merit in what he says. Poor time keeping could be rife in the company and whilst they may be addressing it in performance reviews with individual staff, they certainly aren't going to tolerate new members of staff developing bad habits.
Sometimes new staff can be used to highlight poor practice that has become the norm. He has got the message and his sticking rigidly to the times may well start to rub off on other staff.
Get him to take it on the chin and be proud that he is towing the line and not being a sheep following the crowd.0 -
Turn it round the other way. How would you feel if your employer docked 1 or 2 minutes money from you three times a day?
1 or 2 minutes on their own may not be much, but repeatedly they soon start adding up. It cuts both ways.
You're right it should cut both ways but at my place of employment it doesn't.
My boss just about has a fit if I leave work ( hardly even once in a blue moon, actually ) 5 minutes early. However I work an extra hour or two most days ( plus working at home ) and I get no thanks or even acknowledgement for this, let alone any pay. Not that I want any, I have a job where what I achieve is what counts not how long I am present at work. Obviously in some jobs that's not the case but we don't know in the OPs case.My favourite subliminal message is;0 -
I worked on a production line one time years ago and there was a bell 5 minutes before the end of lunch or tea breaks to let you know it was time to start to go back. Now if everyone had an extra 5 minutes, three times a day, for 250 work days a year and with 1000 employees, you have total of 5*3*250*1000/60 = 62,500 lost man hours.
At £15 per hour salary and say £10 per hour in corporate costs, then they lose 62,500*(15+10)= £1,562,500.
Then there is the lost profit on the lost manufacture and suddenly, those 5 minutes here and there are costing the company many many millions of pounds a year.0 -
Well, clearly in that situation it makes sense. I don't work in manufacturing so it doesn't for me. I don't get paid by the hour either, if I did my employer would be out of pocket as I work so much over my hours on a regular basis.My favourite subliminal message is;0
