• OP please, please don't worry about your puss becoming a tripod! They learn to compensate for the missing limb and can scoot about just like they did with four legs. I guarantee you it will not affect its mobility one iota. Promise.

Good luck with your searches and top marks for taking in your strays, too

I think my problem is that I am seeing my cats as more than cats! I loved the fact that we had kept the five together as they are a little family and I guess I think that he might be sad that he is the one with 3 legs - I know that sounds silly!

Plus, if we do have to give him up, I will feel like I am splitting the family.

Oh its so horrible!

• Noah won't be sad if he loses his leg, he'll adapt. Fortunately animals don't experience emotions in the same way that humans do. It's a blessing in a lot of ways, really

We have had the Mum and Dad neutered and I am looking in to getting the kittens done - they are all male.

Is there any chance that a shelter would put Noah down instead of operating?

I am in Devon, and feel free to post it on the website.

Thanks

Some branches (not all) of RSPCA might PTS but the best thing to do is ask your local shelters: none of the rescues on Purrs will put an otherwise healthy cat down for want of a simple operation, that's why I have suggested there. Here is your thread if you want to check it: http://www.purrsinourhearts.co.uk/index.php/topic,29462.0.html

My cat is also called Noah too and his story is on Purrs, he was a stray in a terrible state but my local Cats Protection saved him - he was in the vets for fifteen weeks!! :A

• Please make every effort to get the leg fixed. Don't palm him off onto an animal shelter to deal with, they will have enough strays as it is.

It's harsh to say, but you should have seriously considered your finances before taking on an animal. If you can't afford the possible vets fees then avoid getting a pet.

Also try Cats Protection, the are generally good in helping with vets bills. However, you do need to start putting some money away for future problems.

Thanks so much, you have been really kind.
I will definately make sure he doesn't get PTS, I couldn't bear that.

Yes it is harsh to say, especially if you had read the thread! The stray who had the kittens turned up and had them 4 days later - we then had to keep them for at least 8 weeks and by then, they had become a part of the family. With younger brothers who had bonded and in the interests of keeping the family together, we did keep them. But we never went out to get a cat- they found us and I believe that is important.

• Try Tailwaggers club trust

tailwaggersclubtrust.com/history.html

Put the 3Wdog in front as I can't post links.

They give grants towards veterinary treatment but only if no help is available elsewhere.

Can e-mail them on admin@tailwaggersclubtrust.com

If you can possibly find a way get the leg repaired. Another accident or illness could affect another leg in the future and if one leg is already gone then there would be no choice but euthanasia.

Try to ignore it: you saved Puss from being out last winter, poor Catkin was presumably stray and pregnant during the awful snow! :( Back to practicalities - the boys urgently need to be neutered and you may be able to get vouchers from Cats Protection or PDSA. At the moment they are at risk of catching FIV or FeLV or getting some other poor little female pregnant. Have they all been vaccinated?

Please do think hard about whether you have the money to keep the whole family long term: five are very expensive to feed, pet insurance, vaccine boosters, flea and worm treatment. Also you say you live with your dad - are you going to be able to keep all five for the next ten to twenty years? Most rental properties won't accept five cats. A rescue would ideally want to home two kittens together so they don't have to all be split up. :T

I know there have been some replies on the Purrsinourhearts thread, and there should be more in the morning so keep checking back if you can. PM me if you want or join Purrs and post (all lovely people there).

• It was about the same time last yr that I took a stray in. A few days later she brought her 3 kittens. As soon as I could, I got the female neutered, all 4 cats wormed and fleaed and proceeded to find a new home for them before I got attached as I knew I wouldn't be able to afford to keep them all. However, now you have given these cats a home, it isn't the responsibility of pet shelters to bail you out. There is financial help out there, it's a matter of putting the effort in to find it.

I did say that what I was saying was going to sound harsh, but the bottom line is it's the truth. Animal shelters are bursting at the seams with unwanted animals (unwanted for whatever reason). It should be a complete last resort, every avenue needs to be searched before contacting an animal shelter.

I do hope the outcome is a good one and your cat gets it's leg fixed and stays with you.
