I suggest the OP reads the information given to them when the V+ box was installed.

I did and it states that HD tv should be set to 720p!

Oh, and Bruce Dawson is a senior software design engineer at Microsoft.

I'm not aware that they have updated the scaler's firmware since, or whether or not it's even capable of using hardware to scale vertically.

I'm not saying the scaler is bad, it's just not "awesome".

First 2 OLD links again. last one about games, im talking about movies

Im not even going to bother pulling up links to back myself up. I have one, ive compared it to several scalers and have a very good idea what it can and cant do

Unless Sony have updated either the hardware or the software, it doesn't matter if they're old links.

Consoles don't magically grow new features.

Marty ~ again your just trying to waste my time
The scaler in it is highly comparable to even the mighty Pioneer 5090. Its THAT good

You just dont like that fact that your completely wrong on this one

Im bowing out, this is seriously boring me...........

Fine, your PS3 is magically better than devices that have proper scalers in them.

CNET tested the PS3 on a reference quality Pioneer PRO-FHD1 with both test patterns and video, and they concluded that "the bottom line is that the PS3's upscaling is pretty good, although it doesn't compare to top-of-the-line players such as the Oppo DV-981HD or the new high-def disc players with HQV processing, such as the Samsung BD-P1200 and the Toshiba HD-XA2."

I completely agree ~ and HOW MUCH are those scalers? 'FOR THE PRICE', its streets ahead of what most people could afford (Or would be willing to afford)
I wanted to buy the euro version of the OPPO 831, but its been canned as they make its succesor which im waiting for
None of this is relevant though. Find me any scaler under 600 quid that matches the PS3

Well, just from the models listed in the above webpage, the Toshiba HD-XA2 can be purchased used for $199 (£120), the Samsung BD-P1200 can be purchased for $899 (£540), and the Oppo DV-981HD can be purchased used for $199 (£120).

I'm not knocking the PS3, its scaler is OK (though it doesn't do such a good job on PS1 and PS2 games IMHO). I'm just saying it's not awesome (though it may be very good for the price).

I am not disagreeing with the facts you have posted as I'm sure the evidence was conclusive from the testings. But at the end of the day its all about customer satisfaction. I think MOST people will have bought a PS3 for 80% gaming and 20% movies, although I'm sure this varies, and you've got to be happy with the results.

I watch Blu-rays and play games regularly on my PS3 though and think its fantastic value for money, scaling included. OK it may not be as good as the Samsung or Toshiba but I'm playing games displayed like they never have been before.

In general I think Sony realise that people won't care so much about playing PS1 and PS2 games on them, or to a certain extent blu-rays over games, the recent games Modern Warfare 2 and Unchartered 2 look and play fantastically well. I think Sony are just beginning to get the best out of their console.

As a player, the PS3 is very good. The PS3 has EDGE ADAPTIVE SCALING ~
    edgeadaptiveps3scaling.jpg
"The console's DVD playback software uses an edge-adaptive scaling process. This lends scaled SD video a very different appearance to the vast majority of DVD players and video processors, which are using non-adaptive (linear) resizing methods."

    I think I know which I prefer

And so does the person you're quoting:
This process works wonders with synthetic content like hand-drawn art (see the above example). For photorealistic content, whether or not you like the look of it is really down to you. Ultimately, I felt that it gave things a slightly processed appearance, but this is probably just because I'm so used to most other scalers. And, let's face it – scaling a low-res source up to HD, regardless of how its done, won't really show you the film exactly the way it's supposed to look, anyway.

If it uses edge-adaptive scaling though, why does it make upscaled games look so blurry?
