Because that's the way Apple design them. They're just different to the old IBM PC layout that most people are familiar with.

Traditionally keyboards used with Unix systems were slightly different as well.
It's my problem, it's my problem
If I feel the need to hide
And it's my problem if I have no friends
And feel I want to die

Is there any means of changing the configuration? Like you can do with a PC that has a US set-up?
  • If i am not mistaken i don't think you can.i have mine set up on UK layout and and it's still the same. You get used to it soon enough.

System Preferences has international settings, but I don't think you can swap the US/UK layout for @ and " (haven't tried so have a look).

    This may help more: http://www.gyford.com/phil/writing/2005/11/20/using_a_british.php

All Macs have had this layout since they were invented, it's far more sensible to have the " and ' on the same key if you are working in design and publishing, but it is annoying when you switched between 2 different systems, I just tend to remember!

Just give it a little while and you'll get used to it.

Once that happens, it'll be PC keyboards that drive you nuts! :p

I don't want to come across as a phillistine. I do work between PC and Mac now and am so akin to touch typing without so much as glancing at the keyboard that it's gonna be a bit of a learning curve for sure.

Thanks for all the replies guys. Am liking my new toy thus far, despite the keyboard!
