Thanks for all of your advice. I have left the milk out of the recipe - to be honest I don't buy white bread from the shops because I can't stand that spongy feel and taste anyway.
I borrowed a book from the library yesterday, and have found a recipe for Marmite bread that I am looking forward to trying.
I have a loaf in the BM now but .... I was rushing out, and forgot that the water needs to be lukewarm  The water was just from the tap, so it will interesting to see what this one turns out like
BTW, has anyone got a really good bread making book they would recommend? It's nice to have a few different recipes to try.0 -
I have a morphy richards breadmaker. I tend to make all of my onw bread. I am just about of bread and need to put the bm on. I have run out of milk powder. Can I make bread without it?0

Yes! I think the milk is to make the crust softer or something, but the bread'll turn out fine without it.Official DFW Nerd Club - Member # 593 - Proud To Be Dealing With My Debts!0

The last recipe posted on the MR MB thread just below doesn't use milk powder and the poster said it was lovely. I am just trying the recipe as we speak!0

I will go off and have a look for the recipe, thanks. I have just put a loaf on with normal recipe minus the milk powder. I am going shopping this afternoon, but needed some bread in for lunch.0

the reason I make my own bread is because DH and DD don't tolerate milk well, so I've never ever added milk powder!weaving through the chaos...0

I use virgin olive oil instead of the milk powder - much much better. The milk powder leaves an unpleasant after taste (to my taste buds anyway) whereas the olive oil does not and is also very good for you.0

I've never used milk powder or butter in my bread as I am allergic to milk. I simply put in yeast, suger, salt, flour, water, and oil (olive or sunflower). I use at least twice the recommended quantity of oil to butter, so 15g butter = 40 ml oil.
And everybody loves my bread!:rotfl:0 -
Yet another breadmaking question! If I add milk powder to my bread, I think I remember reading somewhere that it gives a firmer crust? But - do I need to reduce the quantity of flour to compensate? Or add more water?some people grin and bear it, others smile and do it0

I always put it in my bread but I know others dont bother. My recipe has milk powder in it (2 tbsp)Do what you love :happyhear0
