Luckily we went for free when it was Scottish Heritage weekend. Personally we felt that the entrance fee was a bit steep , but the view is great from up there.sanya1995 wrote:hi any views on edinburgh castle
Camera Obscura is near there and that was great fun, very interactive, an you get a great view up there too. You can use Tesco Clubcard vouchers there so dead cheap to get in.
This was our trip in full

There are two sticky threads in the Scotland Board with all this information and more

There are links to all the attractions and quite a few links to restaurants.0 -
I think the castle is rubbish and a waste of time- not really much to look at, kids will probably prefer the camera obscurer near the castle (i know i did) its like all optical illusions and very freaky/funny, when you get to the top the views are great (and amazing without giving too much away). If you are looking for a bit of history i think holyrood house is much more intersting than the castle and you can spend more time there than the castle.
the zoo is great too and a full day out. bus routes take you all over the place and they are very reliable.0 -

Everyone is entitle to their personal opinion to say that the Castle is 'rubbish' ? Millions of visitors would surely disagree.
The kids might not like the history of the Castle or the audio tour, but they would like to go into the castle to see the views from the top, beside the cannons (which you can climb on easily for pictures / fun), see the one o' clock gun go off, explore the nooks and crannies, see the crown jewels and armoury...... the list goes on !!
You might have thought it was 'rubbish' but other people might enjoy the Castle for what it is.
And why can you spend more time at Holyrood House than the Castle ? There is no time limit at the Castle and it's my personal opinion that the kids would find Holyrood House too Historic and not enough for them to do.****************************0 -

In Scotland we say that if you don't like the weather wait for 30 minutes and you'll get something different! Or, there is no such thing as bad weather, just the wrong clothes!
With luck on your side though, the end of July should be OK.
Also, it would be nice if the people asking for advice about Edinburgh post some feedback after they return.0 -
thanks doonhamer
and we hope too that the weather will be good0 -

With the benefit of hindsight - hot and sunny!
