The LRT bus company serves all of the city pretty well and you can get all day tickets for 2.40 (I think) for hop on hop off.

Weather in last week in July shouldn't be too bad, bring a light weight anorak/umbrella just in case but it should be reasonably warm (about 16 degree min) going up to 22-23 if you are lucky. You will get ocassional showers.

Eating for kids. TGI, Hard rock cafe, jimmy changs chinese buffet, all public spaces are now smoke free in Scotland now so you can make use of some magic pubs (most pubs round about the city centre tourist areas are child friendly.

Take a trip out to south queensferry (on LRT bus route), I think last week in July is their local fair time, lots of fun and games, forth bridges, historic hawes inn pub at bottom of railway bridge, boat trips round islands (seals, puffins and meals)

I live in edinburgh and there is tons to do. A very compact city built around seven volcanic hills.

The Edinburgh Festival/fringe/international runs from the first week of august to first week sep. You will struggle even now to get accomodation for then. (our population almost doubles to 1 million in that month)

We have the Zoo (decent day out) Castle, holyrood palace, You alsoi have roslin chapel 15 mins from city centre by bus.. there really is to much to mention

If your kids like planes, take a trip up the A1 towards Berwick upon tweed and pay Concord (and loads of other planes). I took my daughter there last year and she loved it.
Another good couple of hours is the Edinburgh Dungeons.

Have a look on the trip advisor Edinburgh forum

    http://www.tripadvisor.com/ShowForum-g186525-i108-Edinburgh_Scotland.html

All you could possibly need to know about Edinburgh - but what people have given you on here is great if you read the threads on the Scotland boards and links etc

Any views on Edinburugh Castle ?

Yep it's lovely and worth a visit and you will spend most of your time in Edinburgh using it as the point on your map from which you find everywhere else.
