Morrisons fresh meat complaint

It's alright saying it's 'just a mistake' but it should not happen. My Dh is partially sighted - he would not be able to see the date to check it. It is perfectly reasonable to expect that items you take off shelves are within their sell by date, they make enough money. There should be fool proof stock control systems in place to ensure this never happens.0

What if a child had eaten it?0

its not illegal to sell out of date products - but if someone reports you - you will get a fine!
it deponds on the product really - fresh produce - not really good to use after use by date. other products - sell by date is a guide only - most of them are ok to use even months after sell by.
use common sense - if meat is brown - dont buy it - meat should be dark red - poultry should be white-ish no browning round edges. and if it smells funny!!! dont use it!0 -
A few weeks ago now I bought some mince from Tesco. It was fine when I bought it but two days later when I opened it, it looked very brown. I checked the date and it was within the use by date, it smelled OK so I thought I'd use it.
Cat was mithering me, as she loves fresh mince. I put some down for her, she took one sniff and stalked off in a huff! Needless to say I threw the rest of it away, I trust her nose more than mine!0 -

Animals are great for doing thatI always use my cat or dog when I'm about to eat a meat product to test how much of it is meat - if they won't eat it, I know it's sawdust!

Selling "use before date" products after the date is illegal, it is a spoiled product that can cause harm to who ever consumes it.
Selling "best before date" products is fine as long as the consumer is advised of the short or past expiration of the item.

Morrisons in this case acted fairly it just seems they got off lightly. However that is just because we're used to hearing about the American blame and sue culture. Did you hear about the woman who sued and won against a shop for breaking her arm after tripping over a small child running about in a store. It was her own child, her stupidity but still the shop lost out.
I was in Tesco on Sunday @ 9:30PM, an 8quid bit of topside beef was in the reduced section but not marked down, it had 2.5hours till it was bin food. I aproached an assistant, they scanned it and the wee printer put it down to £1.22other wise they. Why so cheap, £1.22 is better than £0 in the bin.

There was an article in the paper a while ago about a banquet where all the food was prepared with gone off ingredients, including chicken past the use by date.

Nobody got sick.
If the meat is thoroughly cooked, it is unlikely to cause you harm.
I am not advocating buying gone off meat or shops selling it.
But people need to stop this scaremongering.
Undercooking fresh meat is more dangerous than thoroughly cooking "off" meat.Microbiologist Dr Lee Humpheson says: ‘There is a 100 per cent greater risk from food which hasn’t been cooked or prepared properly, even if it’s really fresh, than from food which is past its use-by date, but which has been cooked and prepared properly.’Despite eating, among other things, salmon fillets that were two days past their use-by date, Tesco sausages that were four days ‘past it’ and an Asda chicken fillet that was six days gone, I suffered absolutely no ill effects.0 -
Rule number one...always check your meat before you eat it.....Feudal Britain needs land reform. 70% of the land is "owned" by 1 % of the population and at least 50% is unregistered (inherited by landed gentry). Thats why your slave box costs so much..0

I think there is something in what you say. There was a programme about the way we serve meat that showed that some meat often improves when kept beyond its best before date, but because we've lost the skills to assess our food properly and rely on printed dats, lots of food goes to waste.
Trouble is,there is no sublety on the internet. It's seen as bad form to pick up on incorrect details, even when those details spoil an otherwise great argument. And people often see discussing incorrect side details as a nasty swipe at the whole complaint.
It isn't and people need to learn to appreciate this.0 -
Meat that two weeks out of date would have been noticeable just but its appearance. Sounds like a error somewhere no one perfect. You were compensated I bet you make mistakes know and again there only human.0
