Morrisons fresh meat complaint

:mad::mad:
Just a warning for anyone buying meat in Morrison's

Yesterday I went to Morrison's (not sure if I can say which one) in SUFFOLK
I bought some Turkey breast chopped pieces for a stir fry.

In the evening when I went to get the meat out of container to cook it ,the meat felt very sticky
grabbed my glasses and checked the date
It was November 11th
Yesterday was 26th Nov

If I had just thrown it in wok and cooked it we would have got food poison

We drove back to the store yesterday evening and asked to see the manager

The duty manager came and saw us
I explained what had happened let him see the meat and packaging and receipt
He said it could not have been on the shelf for over 2 weeks
someone must have put the wrong date on it????

I told him I was not happy and would go to the Environmental health ,He then got the butcher manager over to see us ,the butcher manager then said the same it was the wrong label
The Lying sh--
I was offered £5 and some more meat

I told the duty manager I was not happy with that excuse ,So he the got someone to get the guy who labels the meat over to see us

At last someone told the truth ,he told the duty manger ,myself and my husband that there is no way it could have had the wrong label on

the meat is wrapped and labelled each day and the date is checked each time meat is labelled

the manager then said I could have £10 and some more meat

I told him i will never eat meat from his store again

I took the £10 voucher

But I now wish I had not ,I wish I had taken the meat to the Environmental health health
the manger is supposed to telephone me in the next 2 days to tell me how it happened

So please be careful and always check the date on fresh meat and do not be like I was and just pick some up with out my glasses on

sorry this is long I am just so mad with Morrison's

Surely its common sense to check the date on perishable items before buying them?

OK it was a case of poor stock management, some out of date produce had been left on the shelf, not really acceptable but can easily happen.

Sometimes the member of staff responsible for that area can be off and it doesn't get covered properly, people can push produce to the back or move it about the store.

Also, it is unlikely you would have got food poisoning - most food poisoning is caused by undercooked meat (whether fresh or not).

I think the manager may have a point. Had fresh meat been 2 weeks past its sell by date, it would have been green, covered in mould and stinking to high heaven.

I always check the date before i put something into my basket and i dont understand if the meat was over 2 weeks past its sell by date as soon as you opened it surely would have stunk so you would hae known straight away

Depends on the meat? Some meats mature if "hung" and kept in ideal circumstances. I don't think (ICBW) turkey is that sort of meat.

Meat can certainly be contaminated without developing mould.
  • I can see what you are all saying ,that it can not be 2 weeks out of date,
the point is it had NOV11th on the label
so you are saying its OK to have labels on meat
    and the date means nothing???

i also said i did not have my glasses with me so could not check date when i bought it

That's not what's being said at all, it's a bit more subtle than that.

I agree that it's bad that the meat was out of date. It was bad that the store manager argued over this. But you were compensated reasonably I feel for the inconvenience.

Well done to you for returning and complaining. I get so fed up with some of my family who cant be bothered "its only a couple of quid". They laugh at me when
    I return stuff.

  • I've had a morrisons meat experience as well some time ago. However mine was store assistant error . I was looking for some braising steak and saw the assistant marking up a new batch so I wandered over and waited whilst he labelled a new batch.

I picked up a recently packed batch and he had mislabelled it with a date 3 weeks earlier !!. I pointed it out to him wheerupon he quickly removed them all and relabelled them with the correct date.

It was simply an oversight on his part and I saved him a rocket from his manager
  • To be fair, it's not specifically a Morrisons problem. I always check the dates on fresh stuff before I put it in the trolley and in our local Somerfield I regularly found stuff (usually meat) that was past its sell by date. I pointed it out to the staff every time but things didn't seem to improve. The last time I found some I asked to speak to the manager. He said something along the lines of "oh I know, I've told them loads of times to check the dates regularly but they're all lazy". I tried to make him realise it was his job to manage his staff but in the end I gave up and told him if I found anything past its date again I would report it to Trading Standards/Environmental Health. Never found any after that.
