I worked in the local Sainsbury's last year & quite often found items at the back of shelves that was out of date.Best one I found was a 6month ood Battenburg.
Part of the problem imho,is the customer who sorts thru (and we've all done it!) to find the 'best one' in the pile. That in itself causes a lot of wastage.Egg's especially where the customer opens many egg boxes & 'hand picks' her own eggs.
I never but my meat from a supermarket, local butcher for me every time!

I've had a morrisons meat experience as well some time ago. However mine was store assistant error . I was looking for some braising steak and saw the assistant marking up a new batch so I wandered over and waited whilst he labelled a new batch.

I picked up a recently packed batch and he had mislabelled it with a date 3 weeks earlier !!. I pointed it out to him wheerupon he quickly removed them all and relabelled them with the correct date.

It was simply an oversight on his part and I saved him a rocket from his manager

So that proves it can happen. It also might explain why the duty manager and the butchery manager offered this as a reason but the guy that does the labelling insisted that no way, under any possible circumstances, could it ever be his fault :D

I got some lamb chops from a supermarket last month with a use by date of 15th October 2010. I pointed it out to one of the guys who was filling the meat fridges up with new stock and he removed them straight away and thanked me for pointing it out. So it works both ways. I'm sure there's some muppet out there who would leave it until next year when it's gone off then kick up a fuss expecting a bit of compo for it.

I'm sure it was just a mistake on Morrisons part and if they really wanted to sell you out of date meat on purpose they would do it by putting fresh labels on old produce, which i'm sure happens from time to time in shops everywhere.

Why don't you sue Morrison for hurt feelings now? This compensation culture is getting ridiculous. It is your responsibility to check the sell by date when you buy.Accept responsibility for your mistake.

I don't really understand what your problem is to be honest, you bought some meat and it was out of date (school boy error not checking the date in hindsight), you took it back and they apologised and gave you compensation. You claim you will never buy Morrisons meat again but surely there is nothing wrong with their meat that is in date? I might be wrong here but i think Morrisions is the only supermarket to have proper butchers in store? I realise its a bad experience but you can't blame a whole supermarket chain just because some idiot on minimum wage has messed up!

I'm kinda with Goater78 here, you should have checked the date.

BUT! What is everyone about berating you and defending Morrisons???

THE MEAT IS OUT OF DATE! There are lots of partially sighted people who might buy it thinking it's out of date what happens if one thinks they saw the right date but didn't read it right and gets violently ill because of it!

It's illegal to sell out of date products and shouldn't be done. However I believe accidents happen and the fact the OP got £10 is fair enough - I would say thats recompense.

If I mess up I can break a computer or lose a file of someones work (I'm IT support) and I do mes up at times. If a Doctor screws up it's someones life. These guys in Morrisons just screwed up - get over it.

    No it's not.

Surely its common sense to check the date on perishable items before buying them?

OK it was a case of poor stock management, some out of date produce had been left on the shelf, not really acceptable but can easily happen.

Sometimes the member of staff responsible for that area can be off and it doesn't get covered properly, people can push produce to the back or move it about the store.

Also, it is unlikely you would have got food poisoning - most food poisoning is caused by undercooked meat (whether fresh or not).

To be honest, I'm not even sure if I always check. I guess you just assume you're not buying two week old rotting meat. I think I'll have to make sure I do check every time.
