The Toshiba 37XV has Rated power consumption of 126W
The Panasonic has a Rated Power Consumption of 230W but on average 189W which I don't think is too bad considering some Plasma's can hit close to 450-500W in the larger screen sizes (50-60")
My 40in Sony has a 175W consumption so I think 189W average is quite reasoanble for a Plasma.
On the flip side, the quoted figures for LCDs are for 'default' settings which are horrible
Once properly calibrated the wattage goes right down
For example ~

Power Consumption
Default "Standard" [Picture Mode] 149 watts
Calibrated [Cinema]/[Theatre] mode 106 watts:idea:0 -
Plasmas can suffer screenburn from television logos/graphics/extended use of games consoles etc with permanent shadowing onscreen and they have to be regassed or thrown away;LCD's last longer and don't suffer screenburn and are cheaper.0

Im sorry but thats entirely untrue. The latest plasmas (Lets say the last 2 years) dont get 'screen burn' anymore and theyve not needed to be gassed in over 8 years!:idea:0 -

I agree the default settings are awful and need to be calibrated, my Sony was the same.
Interesting article, I suppose the same could be said for Plasma's that are correctly calibrated, That consumption figures can be reduced somewhat?
Those figures for the W5500 40in are quite impressive. My 28in CRT which conked out was rated at 168W.0 -

haha, out of curiosity I looked at Panasonic plasma (Looks like this would be a one off though) ~
http://www.hdtvtest.co.uk/news/panasonic-tx-p42v10-tx-p50v10-20090602153.htm
Power Consumption
Default [Standard] mode 191 watts*
Calibrated [THX] mode 225 watts
Standby 1 watt *
The default factory settings in “Standard” [Viewing Mode] was unusually dim: luminance output measured only 72 cd/m2 on a 100% stimulus windowed pattern, which is the reason why the power consumption of our Panasonic TX-P42V10 test sample was lower out-of-the-box than that after calibration.
This review shows them as they more normally are ~
http://www.hdtvtest.co.uk/news/panasonic-th50pz800b-review-20080907128.htm
Power Consumption
Default [Standard] mode Average 449 watts
Calibrated [Cinema] mode Average 314 watts
Crikey ~ with figures of around 250 to 300 watts for my size of tv im really glad I went with my sony LCD.:idea:0 -

I've seen a ruined plasma in a pub and every time it's used it shows the burn damage from graphics/tv logos etc;so do you need anymore proof of that?0 -

I just got one of these, £399.99 plus £39.95 for the 5 year guarantee.I don't know anything about the technical abilities, but the website will tell you more.
I do know that it looks great and I think it is brilliant. Before I only had a 26" crt tv, which blew up.I don't think that the general user, like myself, would really notice the difference in the technical ability of these tvs, although I do have a LCD tv in the bedroom and you cannot see the picture clearly from certain angles, whereas with the plasma you can see that from any angle.0 -
As for screen burn etc, on my tv it has something that shifts the picture every few seconds, I have never noticed the picture shifting as it only moves a pixel or two at a time, but this minimizes the chances of screen burn.
There is also an option where you can select to "clean" the screen, where it sends across a white line, followed by a black screen, which clears any pixels.
(Not sure if they are called pixels?!)0 -
