Bendix said if the OP took Musehead's advice then the OP would be an idiot. He did not explicitly say that Musehead was an idiot.0 -
Bendix im fighting your corner here, investing is what iv asked about. Theres no other way than that i will see a return i dont think. Matched betting is simply not for me. Does anyone use betfair financals? Think im going to go looking to find my first fund to invest in bendix...Work in progress...Update coming July 2012.

So let's get this right. rictus comes here and looks for advice on investment, and he gets two people suggesting he should actually go into business or go gambling.
Rictus had already inquired about betfair which implied he might be open to ideas about gambling. He also talks about a "bank" of 3k which could be short for "bank roll" - the funds a gambler has allocated for speculating.
People are suggesting alternatives activities to what a typical small investor might embark upon because of the nature of the original post. 12% is a high target and is at the upper-end of what might be achievable with an high-risk investment portfolio.
He then talks about how his aim would be to "make miniumum 1% a month, maybe even aim high and go for 2%". Steady monthly gains are not commensurate with high risk portfolios. The monthly targets (1-2%) imply some kind of personal active involvment and short-term management.
Given this I'm not surprised at all by the alternatives suggested. I would suggest the same. Business owners and professional gamblers do view their activity as a form investment.0 -
It felt pretty explicit when I said it too.
No need to be nasty
I was only offering advice on a way you might achieve such high returns. It could be seen as a researched hands-on investment. Any strategy to return 12% on your money is going to entail some amount of risk.
It's not gambling in the sense that you aren't at risk of losing money if you know what you're doing.
But rictus, you've said it's not for you so no worries.0 -
Thanks anyway musehead. Is there anyone on here who makes money gambling on sports or poker? I know mcsaver says he wins upto £8k a month but dont see him around much to ask more.Work in progress...Update coming July 2012.

As this is a moneysaving website, I don't think you'll find many people that gamble as an investment.
Matched betting is different - you are investing your time, and if you are good with maths it is very low risk.0 -
Just how much can be earnt with matched betting? Does anyone arb or here? Im sure there are 1 or 2 who gamble as an investment. Cant be much different to funds really.Work in progress...Update coming July 2012.

Matched betting can actually get you quite a lot of cash in a short space of time by taking advantage of two different bookies offering promotional deals to new starters. It's actually pretty easy to do, and is fairly safe. However, the number of good deals is limited and you quickly start putting in loads of time just to chase £15-20 or so. I did it for a while when I was on long-term sick leave (recovering from an operation... not much fun!) and managed to get about £500 or so before the deals started being more effort than they were worth to chase down.
You can make a fair bit very quickly, but after that you're very limited unless you want to spend a lot of energy chasing arbitrages.
It's worth investigating, but ONLY (very important) if you full understand exactly what you are doing and how you are making your money. It's very easy to go badly wrong if you don't take the time to learn exactly how you should be betting and laying to generate a no-lose position.
Not an investment at all, but good for a bit of extra cash if you have a few hours free.I am a Chartered Financial Planner

I only play poker casually for fun so am not making serious money with it. I have a good background in maths and stats though and do know that it's exploitable by the skilled player who will also bring game-theory and player-profiling to the table.
There're plenty of books out there and you can get learn online playing microlimit tables with just a few dollars.0
