Conspicuous consumption has become the traditional Christmas now. Turkey for dinner and an XBox 360 under the tree are de rigeur.

We continually look for big solutions to big problems in this country. Sometimes nothing really works so we might as well try little things and nibble away at the edges.

I would love to see my Ma and her cronies bullying the inhabitants of a sink estate out of a fiver every benefit day and showing them how to save that same fiver on their leccy.

It would be worth it for the sheer entertainment value alone

You dont have to reach everyone, you just have to reach enough.
I'd target the women. Woman tend to be less dogmatic.
Plus if they build up savings their benefits get hit.
We are not talking about thousands here, we are talking about a bit put by for Xmas. Just enough to keep them out of the hands of the Provvy or their child benefit out of the hands of loan sharks.
The system unfortunately doesn't encourage prudence.
I am heartily sick of the system.

I am even more fed up of the "them and us" mentality that has gripped this country like a disease.

I think some women (ok, I'm thinking of me) can be quite obdurate.

Women with children who want a nintendo for Xmas can be amazingly agile in their thinking. Regardless of class.

Lol yeah, I told middle son to save for one as I was beggered if I was going to buy him one!

My christmas plans have gone a little awol with the extra hospital and physio appointments have used up what little I had saved, so at the moment, I haven't a scoobie what I am going to do.
We made it! All three boys have graduated, it's been hard work but it shows there is a possibility of a chance of normal (ish) life after a diagnosis (or two) of ASD. It's not been the easiest route but I am so glad I ignored everything and everyone and did my own therapies with them.
Eldests' EDS diagnosis 4.5.10, mine 13.1.11 eekk - now having fun and games as a wheelchair user.

I dont suppose this is a good time to suggest you go to the social and tell them your washing machine has blown up or something similar?

    Look brave but distraught......

Ahh, I'll think of something before resorting to a loan of some kind...the boys know not to expect too much anyway and the parents understand.

I would much rather save a social fund loan for if/when the washing machine DOES blow up instead of just some money to get through Christmas.

Maybe society should stop trying to ram the stereotypical christmas they expect people to have down our throats, then maybe people would feel less pressurised into spending money they don't have on things they don't need?
It's like a rollercoaster that gets bigger and starts earlier every year. It should be banned until half way through December  One year I saw crackers on the shelf in September.... these people need help, or a bullet !!!!!!.
I came in to this world with nothing and I've still got most of it left.

The first Christmas I left my DH, I bought all the brats pressies at a car boot, spent hours cleaning them up and making them look presentable. She never even noticed they were second hand.

Life will get better Sue. This too shall pass
