Sick pet and PDSA

I'm glad you are seeing a way forward. Just wanted to mention that I just paid my vets bill today and the cost for euthanasia and cremation was £50. In fact I would have paid twice that for the kind and compassionate way both the cat and myself and daughter were treated by the staff. Best wishes to your parents and yourself.0

OP, you don't need or appreciate the lecture, but think you have the right to lecture others. Despite your determination to make it so, this thread is not about you, or your parents, it's about the dog. The dog that is still not getting medical treatment while you 'discuss' the options for finding someone else to pay for it.
Perhaps if I didn't spend so much of my time and money clearing up the mess that irresponsible owners leave behind, I might be more inclined to 'keep it to myself'. But as it is, I don't respect your wishes or anything else about this sorry affair. Being pensioners, or disabled, does not absolve people from personal responsibility, and it does a great disservice to the many many pensioners and disabled owners who do make adequate provision for their pets. Speaking of which, it's not, and never was, about insurance. There are many options, including a savings account, a credit card, borrowing off friends or family, whatever. Pretty much anything other than the option of do nothing and then leaving the poor dog without vet treatment while you try and sort something out, too little too late.
I don't particularly care if you find that upsetting or destructive, I find having to walk into a dog pound and pick 2 maybe 3 animals to take for the available rescue spaces destructive, knowing the ones I'm leaving behind will be dead before I get back home. I find it upsetting and destructive when I have to tell one of the charities I donate to that I've got nothing more to give this month, knowing that another dog that has been dumped on them will suffer as a result, because they wouldn't ask me for more if they weren't desperate. Where do you think the likes of the PDSA get their money from in the first place?
There are hundreds, if not thousands, of dogs suffering in this country right now because their owners put their desire to own a dog first, regardless of whether they could meet the dog's needs. There's nothing special or tragic about your story, and as always it's the dog that pays the price. Which is why I will continue to speak out about it at every and any opportunity. When I had my loft converted back into a loft, the neighbours came around and scoffed, and called me retro.0 -

Well I for one think that it was a lucky little dog that found a home with these people and I am sure that it had many a happy year living with them , how cruel some of these comments are and unjustified ,at the end of the day we have an elderly couple doing their best for a little dog that needed a home ,they could I suppose have just dumped it in a rescue or worse just dumped it but instead they offered it a good and caring home surely we should respect them for this .0

what about vets 4 pets or Celia Hammond Animal Trust? Or Age Concern? The internet is a wonderful resourse - do some research and good luck.
I'm afraid I have noticed that some MSE forum contributors can be extremely rude & I'm sorry that you got the responses you did0 -
Vets 4 pets will still have to pay the same lab fees (infact most will have less equipment to deal with inhouse lab work so it could cost more...) And they will not allow a payment plan - it's not up to the vet. Vets 4 pets is a franchise and the contract states no credit because the clients are often people on tight budgets and therefor statistically more likely to fail to pay. The Franchise therefor has the rule in place that as far as I know there is no credit arrangements. So it might be cheaper (or might not) but in the long run unless they can raise the cash...DFW Nerd #025DFW no more! Officially debt free 2017 - now joining the MFW's!

Firstly I actually agree with you on the need for pet insurance and have made such provisions for my own cat. HOWEVER Lemma1968 wasn't lecturing, she was responding to the reasoned arguments for the prosecution with a fairly measured case for the defense - lets be honest, one sided discussions are not discussions at all.
Do note that Lemma's parents didn't decide to own a dog, her sister did and her elderly parents have ended up picking up the pieces. They could (maybe you think they should?) have handed the dog over to a rescue at a much earlier stage, but they didn't. Please just leave it now, we are not helping this dog by further upsetting the family.Declutterbug-in-progress.⭐️⭐️⭐️ ⭐️⭐️0 -
I think it is only fair that if people don't take out insurance they put the money away each month that they would have spent on insurance so they can spend it on vet bills at a later date.
I believe that owning a pet is a luxury and if people can't afford vets bills or insurance then they can't afford a pet. I find it very cheeky that some people expect to get things for free from charities that other people have funded with their hard earned money.
Granted if people's circumstances have changed and they can't afford something they previously could but TBH there are other sacrafices that can be made in most people's situations.
..and you think the point of a charity is ?
We don't FUND charities, we DONATE ..so that those who are in need can get help for free. Those of us with hearts that is. One day it could easily be any of us requiring assistance..especially in old age.
My mum died last year and left some money to animal charities, had no flowers in preference to people donating to Cat's protection League charities...and she'd be chuffed to bits to see her money used in this way. So would I.
What about those stupid parents making us all fund Children in Need eh ? Why can't the kids just go into the workhouse

My parents are both registered disabled, are pensioners and in receipt of state pension and housing allowance.
They have a little Yorkie who has been unwell. Fearing for his health they took him to their nearest PDSA who said that as they did not live within their catchment area they would not be able to treat their little dog. The vet did do a quick examination and provisionally diagnosed cancer as a result of finding a lump. But he said they would have to find another vet and pay for xrays and scans to confirm the diagnosis and then obviously pay for treatment.
They do not have 2 beans to rub together. My dad is 81 and my mum is 70. When they asked why their address was not eligible the reply was "there is little call for it there".
Can anyone offer some advice please?
I am so sorry to hear of your elderly parents distress over the ilness of there beloved dog 'I hope that they can at least get some help from the pdsa or there local vet 'The PDSA is from what i believe a charity to help people in your parents situation to reduce the bills that an older dog will eventually have due to failing health .I have always had dogs and have never had pet insurance 'Vet bills have doubled if not more in the last ten years 'so where as if you took on a dog years ago you would not have needed pet insurance as young dogs are normally pretty fit and active .Most insurance will not take on older dogs as they know that they will end up paying out more for them .
I think that you have come to the wrong site for help and advice as people on here seem to relish in the fact that they can put you down and make you feel pretty bad about yourself .
In fact in all my years of keeping dogs and talking to differant people on differant animal sites i have never met such a bunch of opinonated idiots with little or no compassion for anyone or anything other than there own small minded comments .This poor woman was seeking advice for her parents who are on low income and have taken this dog in through the kindness of there hearts to help there daughter.
It makes me so upset to think that you all can get some sort of satisfaction from belittleing people and making stupid comments on how perfect you all are and that you would never take on a dog unless you could afford to and without insurance BULL !!!!!!!!
You are all full of it !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This site is for giving advice and help to people who have taken the time to register and to ask your advice. It has turned into a little clicky group of big headed critics who have nothing better to do than slate others 'Shame on all of you i hope you all feel good about making this woman feel crap about her situation .As for expecting something for nothing how much taxes etc do you think these elderly couple have paid over the years 'I think they deserve a little help now !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:mad::mad::mad::mad::mad:0
