I like the idea of this challenge but I've only just found this thread.
I hate having to go to the s-market mid-week, once I finish work I just like to drive straight home.
Frugal I'm sure if you have a look at the indexed collections there's a recipe for eggless cakes.Karma - the consequences of ones acts."It's OK to falter otherwise how will you know what success feels like?"1 debt v 100 days £20000 -

I did this for 2 weeks solid in the run up to Christmas ... we decided to have a gammon roast that had been in the freezer for xmas dinner, we had roast potatoes in there too, along with peas and sweetcorn - used a pack of dehydrated stuffing mix that was left over from last year (still in date tho
, and used the last of our gravy powder and some tinned tomatoes to make a sauce - AMAZING CHRIMBO DINNER and couldn't have been nicer if we'd splashed out on all manner of expensive grub.
As for what we ate the rest of the time - rationing out veg from the freezer, also a few months ago we saw a lot of meat reduced to 10p or 20p in Scotmid so bought all of it and froze it - maybe not advisable but it didn't kill us so oh well.
Once the roasters ran out we just had rice with everything, still very yummy, and we started using up odds and ends of sauces etc for example OH made frozen chicken thighs with a glaze containing: honey, paprika, mint sauce, reggae reggae sauce and curry powder - I honestly asked him if he had cheated and bought the glaze - it was NICE.
We also discovered that we had 9 - yes 9! - half used packets of spaghetti - so we consolidated them and tried to use them up by defrosting value burgers and mushing up the burgers to make it resemble mince, then more tinned toms, paprika, garlic which has been in our fruit bowl (?!) since June and voila! spag bol!
We don't use a lot of bread cos it tends to bloat me and we had quite a lot of milk because good ol' Scotmid was selling long life stuff off a while ago - i don't like the taste of it to be honest but OH likes it for cereal and tea/coffee. We never even had to start on the stacks of soup we still have ... I also had fruit juice and decided to use it a bit like diluting juice, watering it down to make it last longer.
You guys are going to get on great and the satisfying feeling of having gotten along fine on what you already have is great! I've prolly missed this week but I think I will use my usual £35/week grocery budget to get some good offers and cheap meat and start the challenge again next week!Credit Card: Jul: 400

Personally, I would use it.
I think we all worry to much about use by dates - of course, they're important on some items, like fish for example, but before the introduction of use by and best before dates, we all just used to use our common sense and our noses - didn't we?
I can't see that there would be anything to harm you in pastry, but that is just mho. It could possibly be related to the butter in the pastry, but I would imagine all that would affect (maybe) is the flavour of the end cooked product, as old or out of date butter can have a sightly "off" taste, IYKWIMAug11 £193.29/£240

Thank you for your advice Hippeechiq. That's the way I usually do things too, so I only really follow use by dates on raw meat and fish etc. I did a Basic Food Hygiene Cert about 10 years ago when I was still at school so I'm relatively confident on testing whether food has gone off or notThe filo pastry got me thinking though. Why would it have a use by date on? What gremilns were lurking in it? So far as I know it doesn't have much butter in it anyway so hopefully there won't be a stale butter taste.

Thank you SalskiNow I feel better
....and I have to figure out what to make with it!:rotfl:OH keeps banging on about a Delia recipe he saw on a Waitrose advert that he wants me to make - I haven't a clue what he's on about!
