Store cupboard challenge

Hi,
My first thought was rather selfish, something along the lines of "these more than 7 weeks until xmas  " - sorry
Anyway, back on track, I agree with the people who have said that you don't really have to use it all up. I know its more to move, but would two more boxes make much difference.
Also, I beleive you said that you use quite alot in lasagna etc. so if you used it all now, that a pretty good store cupboard that you'ed have to make up again.
Hope it all goes well.0 -

Tonight we had kidney bean curry and rice. I had a jar of half price loyd grossman in and a sains basic tin of kidney beans. It was actually pretty good!0

Hi CCP i would crush them finely and use them like you would grated breadcrumbs. They woyld be quite nice I think on the top of macaroni cheese, cauki cheese etc, they would just give things a slightly flavoursome crunch,Every days a School day!0

I hope you don't mind if I join you ? I am a long time lurker / occasional poster on the grocery challenge - typically I attempt the challenge every month but fail miserably !
This is me!
DH started own business at the start of the year, so we haven't had a wage since last December! Been living on TC, ChB & the little I earn - not easy with mortgage, bills, etc & 3 kids (18, 3 1/2 & 1). Outgoings suddenly rocketed in the last couple of months & we've got about £250 - 300 a month for food, groceries, petrol, haircuts, incidentals. Doesn't sound too bad, but I seem to be struggling - so here I am looking for inspiration again! Oh, & don't know if I'll have a job after Christmas! Isn't life grand? :rotfl:
Anyway, I'm rather inspired by folks across the forums (fora?), so I need to stop moaning & crack on!
Some of the "food mountains" posted are tremendous - would feed us for a six-month! I seem to have lots of 'bits', parts of meals, so seem to be buying all the time, yet still have not much in - does that make sense!
Need to do a proper stocktake, will post later or tomorrow if any of you smashing folk could advise!
Just read all this, bit of a moan - sorry! - but you all seem to have broad shoulders!

Have come over from Grocery Challenge; thanks for link. I don't feel quite so bad for having far too much food for 2 people having read some of the store cupboard/freezer lists. I don't seem able to resist a 'bargain' and having plenty of storage space I never have to consider 'where will it fit?' or 'Do I have the room?'
I am trying to get the energy to go through my cupboards and list everything. Think I will need to lay down in a darkened room to recover! Maybe I'll just try NOT TO BUY ANYTHING for a few weeks. Any volunteers to tie me down? Just read that and it sounds slightly naughty:rotfl:oh well I'm sure you know what I meant!
Definitely need to run freezer down as there isn't any room for pre Christmas cooking. I do have 2 'spare' chest freezers, 1 lge and 1 small, but don't want to put them on as I know I will want to fill them up! The freezer I use is a tall upright with drawers and at the moment I would have difficulty getting an extra chop in! OH wants me to make some chicken pies using 'best ever pastry' recipe from start of GC as he really likes them but have to make room first.
Thanks for another great supportive thread. Just have to remember 'just say no' I know this wasn't thought up for compulsive food shoppers but hopefully might work!0 -
Frogletina wrote: »I spent £75 on an online shop last night and was struggling at the end to find things I needed to get to that total which would enable me to claim a 15% discount! I bought things to store like shampoo on offer, and crisps which I'll probably eat more than I need to simply because I have them! I do put things away (convince myself they are not in the kitchen, so not to be used yet - but I know where are, and there is only me here!)
Yet, there is nothing to make a single meal. But with, for example, washing capsules at 3.06, instead of 3.70 at the local shop and getting 15% discount on top, it seemed a good idea to stock up. And the shampoos saved me £5 in total
Can I ask what people think about buying to store like this? I don't have a car so for me it is ideal to shop online now and again and have it all brought to my 3rd floor apartment, lift only goes to the second floor!
Remember! the supermarket is not your friend! Those lovely e-mails they send offering money off when you spend so much are a very clever way to get you to spend more money with them! Who hasn't had an e-mail from Mr A or Mr T offering so much off if you spend over £50? If your food bill is £46 odd then why not add that extra pack of ..... to bring the total up but of course (and certainly in my case) I add plenty extra to make sure I don't miss out (working on the basis that once the offers have come off, I don't want to be 10p short or something stupid).
Our Mr T was refurbished earlier this year and once this was complete, they sent me lots of lovely vouchers. I can remember one morning walking round the store *finding stuff* to buy, adding it on my mobile phone calculator *just so* I could get the benefit of the voucher. It was so stressful and half the stuff I bought, I didn't need.
I didn't use the rest of the vouchers. They are only a saving if its stuff you need. Why line their pockets? I did think about using the vouchers to get my wine for xmas (the vouchers were £10 off a £30 spend) but I knew that the wine wouldn't last till xmas - so it wouldn't be a saving at all!!
Anyway after all that mumble jumble above, if you have meal planned and you are stockpiling items that you will use and are not buying stuff just for the sake of getting the spend up then I agree that its a good idea to stockpile but avoid the BOGOFS on fruit other fresh produce if it isn't something you will get round to using. Who hasn't taken advantage of a bogof or get 2 for x amount only to throw one away .... :eek:0 -
BTW, does anyone have any ideas of what I could do with a pack of poppy seed crackers? My sister left them behind when she went home earlier - I'm not keen on crackers but I don't want to throw them away, either. Would they work as a breadcrumb substitute if I broke them up, do you think?
I just did a quick Internet search for lamb and poppy seed recipes and it came back with a few curry recipes and also one for a leg of lamb stuffed with poppy seeds and bulghur wheat. I'd imagine it would taste lovely with the crushed up poppy seed thins - might be worth trying with a cheap lamb breast too.

I am not doing so great on the first few days of my SC challenge. I was trying to be organised and prepared the large swede, mushrooms, leeks and peppers I got in my veg box ready for the freezer as I wanted to ensure that they would not get wasted and I can't fit them in without a good sort out which I won't get done today as we are out at relatives.
I also have party leftovers to go in including 2 uncooked beef burgers, 6 veggie burgers and 6 veggie hotdogs and a dozen rolls! The cooked leftovers, salad, cheesecake and donuts will be for our tea tonight. I am sure the beer will get drunk at some point over the next week or 2.:D
I hope you are all doing better at it than me:o I am off to add these things to my list.Save £10,500 - £2673.77 - 25.5%
