next challenge for me is to find ways of using up a LOT of various root veg. i've got my first box scheme box coming on wed but i still have a lot of things in the house to use up including celeriac, swede, carrots, parsnips and potatoes.

    http://www.riverford.co.uk/recipes/recipe.php?catid=5&recipeid=101

How about this, Im making it tonight ( minus the swede) its taking ages to cook weve already eaten the main part of the meal!
 Well aint funny how its the little things in life that mean the most? Not where you live, the car you drive or the price tag on your clothes.
Theres no dollar sign on piece of mind
    This Ive come to know...
So if you agree have a drink with me, raise your glasses for a toast

Have to say, by the time it was ready- it did take a while! it was LOVELY ( i used the ginger- could hardly taste it) the Aldi shallots instead of onion, no celeriac or swede- and it was fab

I did it in a cake tin with a view to be sliced a bit like spanish omelette. OH who claims he doesnt like snips declared a triumph. Also if Id cooked it to be a bit firmer( maybe on a higher heat) it could be sliced and used as a sandwich filling in eg pitta bread with salad.

My kenwood chef really came into its own doing the grating task for me last night. :T

  • I think its about time i pulled on all your knowledge!!! I have never used this thread before so here goes:

i took a pack of prawns out of the freezer this morning thinking i have curry sauce or thai sauce, i have neither but i do have a cupboard full of things lingering!!!
I have tinned tuna, was wondering about a tuna and prawn quiche with a white sauce rather than eggs
also have lots basmati rice and wondered about risotto, i have not made this before but although i have some onions i only have 1 parsnip and some tinned and frozen peas and tinned sweetcorn
i have no frozen fish....apart from in batter.... and some expensive tuna steaks that will make a meal themselves....and i think some frozen salmon

waffling so i will stop now and await some ideas!!

    Hmmm .... :think::think:

Well, I'm not sure your idea of a quiche made with white sauce would work - you need the eggs to make a quiche set, so I think you'd just end up with a pool of sauce in the middle of a pastry case. The tuna / prawn / white sauce combo might be quite nice as a pasta sauce, though, or topped with mashed potato for a variation on fish pie. Or you could use the salmon, for a more standard fish pie.

Prawn and pea risotto's quite nice - there's a recipe here if you're interested - I've made this before and it's a decent (if not brilliant) recipe. If you don't have risotto rice you can use basmati, although it comes out with a rather different texture.

    Does that help at all?

it does thanks, although i have just found my recipe for sweetcorn flan in my hamlyn all colour cook book and its a white sauce rather than egg and milk, i have made it once before and it was nice

i have had another root and found honey, lazy ginger and sesame seeds, have i seen a recipe with these and prawns??

the trouble is i make what i can do and a bit timid of trying new but also shop to offers so end up with odds and ends, my cupboards are bursting and i have nothing familiar!!

i am trying to think outside the box!!!

i may be back quite often in a bit to clear my cupboards, what a great thread.

    Hi knowledgeable and friendly ones!

I have a cauliflower that needs using up and all I can think of making is cauliflower cheese and if I did this I don't kow what to eat with it?

    Any ideas?

I would be really interested to see that recipe, if you wouldn't mind - I never knew you could make a quiche without eggs.

The ginger, honey and sesame seeds would be lovely with the parsnip - I would just mix them together with a splash of oil, drizzle over chopped parsnip, and roast until golden.

If you want to include the prawns you could do much the same thing but as a stirfry, as I'm not sure whether prawns would be particularly tasty roasted.

fedupandskint - throw it in the compost bin, would be my first (and only) choice - I can't stand cauliflower! I know some people have cauliflower cheese as an accompaniment to a roast dinner though, or you could add some pasta to do a sort of cauliflower and macaroni cheese-type dish?

What about a cauli/chick pea curry?
I have also done a curry thing with red lentils and cauliflower before?
