Store cupboard challenge

  • This has been my approach for the last few years, we always end up with lots of "odds" of food after Christmas and without making a concerted effort to use them up they rot in the fridge and cupboards until March when they get binned.

For two of us we can get to the end of January without needing to buy anything other than fruit and a little bit of vet, we've usually got a freezer full of veg, we make our own soya milk and make our own bread.

The last few days always produce an interesting combination of foods but you can make that part of the fun and involve your kids in the "what can we make from this..." game.

  • Not sure whether I can join in (although the freezer is straining!) but I'll certainly be watching and hoping to pick up some tips from you professional lot....

Really need to get all of my store-cupboard stuff written down and get some menu planning done during the lull before New Year

  • Plan on getting some reduced stock for our new chest freezer after Christmas, but will poke my first ever tentative toes into this challenge.

It's started well, Got the extra large chook out to thaw, & Mr Woggle was persuaded that yes it will be large enough for 4 when you add on a pork joint, force meat stuffing, and pigs in blankets. :)

Ooh sorry, no. I didn't realise I was treading on any toes here. I was just thinking that I probably am not the only one with a mountain of food:rolleyes: Compared to previous years where a lot gets wasted I was starting a challenge to buy no more food until February. Maybe the mods will stop this/move this if I shouldn't have started this thread :o

I didn't think this was the January Grocery challenge. I've always avoided that thread as it seems that it has thousands of messages posted every day!

As I see it, this is more about using what we have left over, rather than the grocery challenge objective of sticking within a certain amount.
