I've only just seen the last few posts.
So it was Norton interfering with Avast? I since uninstalled it anyway as it kept leaving a message on startup that could not be closed.
I installed MSE so unless I hear otherwise I'll not try Avast again.

You might want to ensure your router's firewall is ON, and if using wireless disable broadcast of the SSID (again, in your router's settings page).
Busenbust, looking at my router, there is a tick next to 'allow broadcast of name (SSID)'. Should I untick then? What exactly does this do?

It would be wise (as I said previously) to disallow broadcast of SSID, so untick it.
Disabling this feature does improve the security of your WLAN. Once your wireless clients are manually configured with the right SSID (as is the case with your clients), they no longer require these messages to be broadcast. HT Helps.:)

Disablng SSID broadcast has no effect on security and when another user sets up a wireless network nearby, it is better for them to easily 'see' what channels are in use locally to avoid causing interference.
