As I was loading up I was offered a free trial of Norton but I ignored it knowing I had Sygate and Avast exe files on my flash drive.
Perhaps I should go with that at least until I find my feet and then deinstall it?
Certainly an option but I really do dislike Norton. What about Avira or Avg (the latter gets decent recommendations here, although I do use Avast myself).

So did I which is why I didn't want to.

I had AVG before Avast and that got a bit problematic a while back after an upgrade to a new version.

Actually maybe I was panicking for nothing:
'system and security' 'action center' says that windows firewall is actively protecting the computer and 'norton internet security reports that it is up to date and virus scanning is on' so not sure what the norton message I ignored was then.

Installed firewall programs says Windows on and NIS off.
    Safe to go online then?

Windows 7 will take a bit of getting used to after XP.

It will but, from what I've read and seen, it really is XP full throttle (what Vista should have been). For malware Microsoft MSE is also very good (I have it installed here). http://www.microsoft.com/Security_Essentials/

Ok I think I just need reassurance that it's safe to go online and then I can try and work my way round this machine.

It looks as though Norton is already acting as an AV if not the firewall.

If it is safe, I think I'll then download from your link in post 24.

I'll come back to this. Thanks for your time.

Oh, I think you're pretty much secure now;) You might want to ensure your router's firewall is ON, and if using wireless disable broadcast of the SSID (again, in your router's settings page).
  • IThelp,
Have you attempted to install the applications through compatibility mode and run them as an administrator? In some cases this will be the only resolution necessary.
Should you require additional assistance, Microsoft does have an official Windows 7 Support Forum. It is supported by product specialists as well as engineers and support teams. You may want to also check the threads available there.

*ahem, the latter no longer gets positive recommendations -its recent versions have very much gone down the toilet and its failure rate of actually detecting viruses is falling away too.

avira is good but was havign short term issues with its update servers recently....

if you had norton installed thats what I suspect was interfering with avast -i've switched to it recently (on a Win7 64-bit machine) and it runs perfectly

    ^OK, I'll just stick to Avast. Norton? I run a bloody mile:eek:
