If it's not too bad or if you want to keep on top of it, then 1/2 cup bicarb and 1/2 cup vinegar poured down, left for a bit and then flushed out with boiling water will help.

However, if it's really bad, you could try caustic soda. Follow the instructions on the side of the packet - it's nasty stuff but it does work.

After that, it's a case of taking the U bend off underneath and cleaning it manually. It's not that hard.

Once it's clean - then it's easy to bung the vinegar/bicarb mix down every once in a while. Oh - if it's your kitchen sink, try not to pour fats and oils down there - that's what tends to block it up. Also, you're feeding the rats in the sewers - the fats form stalactite like structures apparently and the ratties love it :(
  • Thanks Roller Coaster,

Its not the kitchen sink thank god, errrrrrrrrr rats.

Thanks for advivce I will give that a go.

sometimes all it needs is a plunger.Block up the overflow, put some water in the sink to make a seal then use a rubber plunger on the plug hole .The yuck usually comes up into the sink and you can flush it down the loo or bin it.

Part fill the sink (if it isn't already pooled with water) and pour in a load of salt and this shopuld unblock it. You'd think it wouldn'y but IME it always does and it also works for blocked toilets.

Last time this happened to me, I took the U-Bend off and cleaned it out.

I agree with culpepper about the plunger.

Our kitchen sink used to block frequently and I tried everything under the sun....mr muscle, caustic soda, etc but the only thing that has ever worked has been a £3 plunger.
  • Thanks everyone. Going to pound shop at weekend to see if I can get plunger Salt I will try tonight to see if it goes.

    hi...

    i have a similar problem...

sink blocked with fat - my bad was economising and didn't buy extra lean steak mince....

i have tried a bottle of bleech a bag of salt, and some hot water - the hot had no effect as there was so much cold...

is there anything i can do by myself that doesn't involve a plunger? as there are no shops for miles open and i do nt drive....

    please help!!!!!

i was thinking of emptying the sink of water andf then trying lemon juice or vinegar? but i don't want to gas myself if that might react with the bleech....

i'm wary of trying to manually do it as i'm paranoid that i won't be strong enough to undo/do up the pipes again or that i might do it wrong however i will as a last resort....

    many many thanks....

Are you sure it is blocked with fat?

You could removed the trap under the sink as that is very possibly where any blockage will be situated.
It is not that difficult to do.

Then clear that out with boiling water, not just hot water.

    yep definately fat...

i meant boling water, i'm really wary of touching the pipes and stuff under the sink as they have been nothing but hassle since i moved in - rented.... nothing seems to be attached as it should - for example when i turn off my hot tap i have to hold the tap bit to stop it turning rather than the tap turny bit....

i have just emptied the old water from the sink - incidentally the salt wasn't a good move apparantly, and have poured a kettle of boiling water in it...

i have marked it and it might be going down - not sure yet....
