Would you rather your child was less fit and alive, or cycled and had his head crushed in a collision with a car?
As a personal thought, to crush your head in a collision, I doubt very much a helmet is going to mitigate the damage very much.

I had an interesting discussion with someone about this today.
He said that if you look at people involved in accidents then in most cases a helmet will help. The cases where it doesn't are where the extra leverage due to the helmet increases twisting injuries to the head.

However, he had looked at the data for a larger population and it appeared that the risk-compensation effect meant that it was a bit 50-50 as to whether helmet wearing made things better or worse as to the probability of injury.

There really should be a law requiring cyclists to wear helmets, hi vis and have lights on their bikes.
Seeing how it's only of consequence to them then I see no need for a law.

Hmmmm. Moped riders with a top speed of 30mph- helmets by law.

Freakybacon mountain bike on slick tyres downhill- cycle computer recorded top speed of 46.9mph(could not verify this as I had a few other things on my mind at the time)... helmets optional.
