  • That's probably because (a) more children walk than cycle (b) many parents are like niall24 and make their children wear helmets when they cycle.

Suggesting that niall24 is wrong in insisting upon her son wearing a helmet when he cycles is a bit beyond the pale, don't you think? Are you a parent? Would you rather your child was less fit and alive, or cycled and had his head crushed in a collision with a car?

No, it isn't beyond the pale. Come here, offer an opinion, and prepare to be offered contrary opinions.

I'm not blaming niall24, I'm blaming his wife for being a typical reactionary hysterical parent.

If I were a parent (not that it has any bearing on the discussion) I'd spend more time teaching my children how to use the roads safely, than I would worrying about high-visibility vests and helmets. I used to climb ropes down cliffs, and go running around tips, when I was a child, as did nearly all my friends.

Children don't have childhoods any more, they have paranoid parents too afraid to let them make their own mistakes. I didn't like the broken bones I suffered, but I'm glad I suffered them.

You may be happy for your broken bones, but if you were in a collision with a car and suffered severe brain damage, you'd probably not be here to tell us about it. A helmet doesn't prevent broken bones, it lessens the chance of death or severe brain damage. Those aren't the sort of things which teach a child an important life lesson.

It's little wonder that some people get annoyed and seldom post with such puerile, almost insulting, comments.
Thankfully I'm above both of you and as I already said.......I've nothing to say about either of you children.

They need to make cycle helmets and all the high viz gear a lot more trendy if they want more kids to wear them. Try telling your average teenager that it doesn't matter how stupid they look as long as they're safe and see how many actually listen!
