Oneday77 ... I have windows XP but here is what came up at run.
operating system - microsoft widows XP home edition
    System manufacturer - P4M80P
    Processor - Intel(R) Celeron(R) D CPU 3.33GHz
    Memory - 478 MB RAM
    DirectX Version 9.0c (4.09.0000.0904)
    Page File - 416MB used 703 available.

What info do you need off 2nd tab - it shows Direct X files but wont let me copy and paste them ??
Looking at the specs. You Graphics is using abi=oit 32MB of RAM so not an issue. However the processor is not very well suited to media tasks, celeron processors are purely low end products. Also as Alien' said the memory is pretty low. Memory is an internal component and is very easily installed. If you go to Crucial.com and use the memory advisor tool it will give you an idea as to what you need and price.
What I would say is are you likely to be doing a lot of media intensive tasks? If so a new PC will be better in the long run, upgrades will only help to a certain extent. You could be lucky and you PC will upgrade to a newer Core 2 or Pentium Dual Core but it may not combined with more memory will help.
I know this site is all about saving money but if your time is cheap then go with the waiting, if not then you'll need to spend some cash.

Thanks Alienrik - did the Dr Web scan and it scanned 10417 objections and found no infections, modifications etc............ phew!!
Do I need to do anything else?
Oneday77 - I do quite a lot of 'media intensive' tasks which I didnt reckon I would be doing when I bought the computer which at the time was only for a bit of word processing and internet usage -therefore a basic model - there has been a lot of changes in my circumstances etc which means I do spend prob way too much time on my computer.
Hopefully in the New Year I may be in a position to purchase a new hard-drive as my monitor etc all in good nick - maybe one of you guys will be able to point me in the right direction.
    Thanks

It's called a base unit; the hard drive is one of the components inside it. See previous post on the subject for details.

If you feeling Brave and you can follow instructions have a look at the build a budget Media PC in this months CustomPC magazine. It does cost £500 but you maybe able to recycle some of your components ie case & hard drive. It will be better than anything you pick up off the shelf for the same money as it includes the new Intel generation of CPUs and leaves room to upgrade later and you know what is in it. You don't have to follow the advice on the overclocking either.

Really, a new graphics card and more RAM will make a world of difference. You will at least be able to convert in real time. £50 max.

If you went in to PC World to buy a base unit, we would just give up on you. ;)

NeroVision 5 or DVD FLICK. That's strange that it takes that long for you, with relatively high end equipment.

Tried ConvertX, but it took longer.
